When none of my sisters said a word, I turned to find them already out of the vehicle and headed inside the clubhouse, laughing and chatting a mile a minute.
“Motherfucker,” I groaned, hanging my head.
Climbing out of the farm’s SUV, I made it to the door, only to be stopped by Kansas, who was grinning from ear to ear. “You are one brave motherfucker, Shadow. Bringing your sisters to this club.”
“Shut up,” I growled, pushing past him.
Inside, I scanned the room to find Faith sitting at the bar talking quietly with Whisper. Hope was standing next to Kali, and they were both laughing at something Angel was saying. Charity and Nevil were walking off with Judd, and Joy, well that brat was sitting too damn close to a brother named Lips.
“They will be fine. The boys know not to do anything,” Kansas said beside me.
“Not worried about the brothers.” My eyes focused on Joy, who was now trailing a finger up Lips’ bicep. Marching over to my little sister, I grabbed her arm and yanked her to her feet as I glared at Lips. “She’s sixteen, asshole!”
“Damn it, Zeke!” Joy whined, stomping her little booted foot on the floor. “Not cool!”
Getting in my sister’s face, I growled, “You are not to talk to anyone. You hear me? You sit your ass down and look at your phone.”
“But...”
“No buts, Joy. I meant it. None of these brothers will give you the time of day. You are jailbait. Off limits. Persona non grata.”
“I’ll watch her, Shadow,” Kali said, walking over with Hope. “Hi, I’m Kali.”
“Hi,” Joy whispered.
“Go speak with Kansas. She’ll be fine. I promise,” Kali reiterated. Reluctantly, I nodded, handing my sister over to the President’s ol’ lady.
“Come on,man,” Kansas laughed. “No one will disobey my woman. Let’s go to my office and talk.”
Taking another look at my sisters, I followed Kansas into his office.
Sitting in a chair, I sighed as Kansas grinned. “You look like shit, man.”
Narrowing my eyes at him, I scoffed. “You try wrangling four sisters and tell me how well you fare, then we can talk.”
Kansas shivered. “I have three older brothers. That’s enough drama for me. So, what brings you by today?”
Leaning back, I said, “Whisper is clean. Ain’t him. And it’s not Blackjack either.”
Kansas nodded. “That’s good to know. You still thinking it’s Monk?”
I nodded. “Yeah, but something else has popped up.” I said, reaching into my jacket for the photo I downloaded from Whisper’s phone. Handing it to Kansas, I added. “Whisper took that the other day.”
“He gave you this?”
I nodded. “He knows you’re having me investigate the officers and why. Dropped by yesterday and came clean. Won’t disclose what he told me, but he’s trustworthy and he’s offered to help.”
“What about Blackjack?”
“Like I said. He’s clean.”
Kansas looked at me. “Gonna need more than that, Shadow.”
I shook my head. “No. you asked me to investigate and clear them. Not to disclose what I find. You’re just gonna have to accept what I say.”
“That’s a tall order from a man who killed my brother-in-law.”
“You knew what you were asking when you insisted I do this. Either you want me to do it or not. Choice is yours,” I challenged. It was no skin off my back if he chose to walk away from this endeavor. My plate was full of shit at home and Joan. Didn’t want or need any more drama.
