“Mom, if you can hear me, I wish you would tell me what to do. I’m not big on signs, you know that. But I guess if you could, you would tell me to put on my big girl panties right about now. So, I guess tomorrow I will head up to the pack lands. Since apparently no one in this town is going to let me put it off anymore.”
Nodding to herself, she put the mini in reverse, and backed out of her parking space. Driving back to the cabin she listened to Cyndi sing and realized, just maybe, her mom was watching over her. Maybe that sounded silly, but it made her feel a bit happier.
When she got back to the cabin, she carried all the groceries in and put them away. As she was finishing putting the last things in the fridge, Fiona came running at Kenzie, and rammed straight into her legs.
Kenzie bent down to pet her head, surprised when she let her. Apparently, she was gone too long, and Fiona missed her, because she let Kenzie pick her up too.
Cradling her to her chest, she ran her fingers through her fur. Fiona started purring and nudged her under her chin with her head. Guess, she was feeling a bit lonely too. She carried the cat as she walked over to the couch and sat down and pulled a blanket onto her lap, then she laid the cat on top. Instantly Fiona stood back up, turned in a couple of circles, then laid back down and curled up in a ball.
They stayed like that for the next few hours watching a movie on Netflix. She wasn’t even sure what the plot of the movie was though, as all she could think about was her plan for tomorrow. She supposed she could just drive right on up there; not like she had a better plan.
Hopefully, she wouldn’t get eaten by guard wolves or something. But she didn’t have any other ideas. It’s not like she could call first.
A problem for another day.
Right now, she was exhausted. Carrying Fiona, she walked back to the master bedroom. For a moment, she just stood there taking in the beautiful room. She could see her mom everywhere. The walls were teal with white trim and there was a soft grey carpet. The bedspread was a light seafoam and grey and had so many pillows she would probably get lost in them. It made her feel like she was at home.
After washing her face and brushing her teeth, she changed into a tank top and sleep shorts then climbed into bed. Again, Fiona came and cuddled right up to her. The sound of her purring was soothing, and as she listened it made her relax and slowly, she drifted off into a dreamless sleep.
Chapter 4.
Aiden
After speaking with Chris, they were trying to decide if they should seek out Mackenzie or wait and see if she would come to see them.
They figured she was probably staying at Megan’s cabin, since that seemed the most logical place. There weren’t exactly chain hotels around here. There was just one little bed and breakfast right off the highway.
Currently they were gathered in Marshall’s office, discussing the best way to go about approaching Mackenzie without scaring her off.
Marshall wanted to drive right up to the house and introduce himself, basically giving her no chance to run away. Chris wanted to be more cautious and possibly wait for her to come to them. Aiden was on the fence and thought both options sounded good in different ways but didn’t consider it his choice to make.
“Aiden.” Aiden’s head snapped up at Marshalls sharp tone. He had drifted off into his own thoughts and missed the last few minutes of the conversation, obviously both men had noticed, “Tie breaker. Do we wait, or seek her out?”
So much for staying out of it, as he started to answer there was a knock at the door, and they all turned towards the noise. Aiden took a deep breath to see if he could tell who it was. There were two different scents, one was Jordan and the other one was unfamiliar. It smelled like the woods and apple pie, with a hint of cinnamon. His mouth started to water, and his heart beat faster with anticipation.
He needed to know who was on the other side of that door as if it were life or death.
He took a step forward, but Christopher beat him there. Pulling the door open, he revealed the most beautiful woman Aiden have ever seen. She was petit, with curly black hair, pale green eyes and full lips, perfect for kissing. She was dressed casually in those slip-on shoes girls always like, jeans, and a deep green shirt that made the color of her eyes pop.
She took in the room with a quick glance, as if she were assessing the occupants and every possible exit. She looked nervous. As her eyes landed on Aiden, he couldn’t look away.
It felt like the Earth stopped moving and everyone else disappeared. In that instant, he knew. She was his.
Aiden had found his true mate.
Then Jordan spoke, distracting the woman enough that she looked away from him. “Chris, I tried to mind link you, but you blocked me out. This woman came to the gate and asked for you. Says her name is Mackenzie Lord.”
Aiden sucked in a deep breath as he realized this was Chris and Rhiannon’s daughter, Marshall’s sister. Taking her in again without being distracted, he realized she did look a lot like the pictures he’d seen of Rhiannon. Marshall took after Christopher, so it was hard to tell that the two were twins.
Looking over at Chris and Marshall, he realized they were both frozen in shock. They were just talking about trying to see her and yet, now they were both staring at her, frozen. The silence was becoming a bit awkward.
He cleared his throat to get their attention then stepped forward. “Thank you, Jordan, we’ll take it from here. Miss, will you please come in?”
She took a deep breath as if to steady herself, then stepped into the room as Jordan closed the door behind her.
Mackenzie
She woke up feeling great. For the first time in a while, she had actually slept through the night. Looking around the bed, she noticed Fiona was no longer lying with her but that wasn’t a surprise. Cat whims and all that.
