“Well,” Ava swallows, “he has a motive.” Her eyes land on me, and I do a double take.

Turning fully, I lean over the back of my chair and hiss, “Fuck you, Ava! King is innocent.”

“We know he is,” Madison soothes, stroking my back as if she’s worried I’ll cause a scene and get myself thrown out of class.

“Do we?” Ava challenges.

This time, Kara stares at her disbelievingly. “This is King you’re talking about. Our friend. Or have you forgotten?”

“I haven’t forgotten. I’m just trying to look at this from the cops’ perspective. Think about it for a second… Keira fucks King behind Liam’s back. Liam retaliates and puts King in the hospital. Then Liam goes missing soon after King is released. Innocent or not, of course the cops are going to look in King’s direction. He has the perfect motive.”

“Only he doesn’t,” Kara emphasizes while Madison continues stroking my back. “King is a lot of things, but he’s not a murderer.”

I feel sick. There’s a good chance I’ll throw up all over the classroom if this nightmare doesn’t end soon.

“Can we just drop this discussion now?” Madison asks, sensing my discomfort. She shoots Ava a stern glance. “Let’s drop it, alright? This is stressful enough for us all.”

Why do all classrooms look the same? Rows of seats, a whiteboard with barely eligible notes, and vertical blinds that sway in the slightly cold breeze. Why do all teachers insist on keeping the windows open? Even a small crack makes a big difference. As a result, the classroom has a nip to it.

I’m shivering from the cold.

“As soon as class is over, we’ll head back to the locker rooms, okay?”

I nod, even though the thought of sitting here and doing nothing turns my stomach.

I hate feeling this powerless.

I enter the interrogation room and place the thick folder down on the desk before pulling out the chair and taking a seat opposite King Knight. The young man in front of me, with arms covered in ink and unruly, raven hair, watches me steadily from beneath his dark lashes. It’s unnerving how collected he looks, considering the reason he’s here. His brown eyes lazily slide from me to Riveiro and back again.

“We want to ask a few questions.”

“My father’s lawyer is on his way,” King drawls, and I know we’re almost out of time. As soon as he arrives, he’ll tell King not to say another word.

“We just want to ask you a couple of questions,” I repeat, sliding the folder toward me.

King’s eyes flick down to it. “Why am I here?”

Straight to the point. This kid is smart.

After sharing a glance with Riveiro, I release a breath through my nose, closing the folder again. “Alright… Your fingerprints were found in Keira’s bedroom.”

King slowly lifts his gaze to mine. “And?”

“Keira never mentioned you, son. Your set of fingerprints was found at the crime scene after Jasper’s head was discovered and two of my officers were brutally murdered.”

King stares at me for a long moment, his face a blank mask.

“Care to tell me why your fingerprints were in Keira’s bedroom on the day of the discovery?”

“Isn’t it obvious?” His voice is a deep drawl, each word sliding off his tongue with ease. “We fuck.”

I say nothing. Officer Riveiro says nothing.

“After dark, I climb in through her bedroom window and fuck her.”

A shiver slides down my spine at the detached coldness in his tone. King smirks, shrugging a little. “And then I climb back out.”

“So you were having an affair with Keira?” Riveiro asks.
