His eyes home in on her. “Maybe… You found her boyfriend?”

I don’t doubt they had an affair. Not after how protective she was of him today.

I try to understand why, though. Liam was,is,the golden boy—the popular football star with a rich family and colleges vying for him. King, on the other hand, is untamed, despite his privileged upbringing. There’s a darkness surrounding him that has the hairs on the back of my neck standing on edge.

“No, we haven’t found him,” Riveiro admits, keeping her tone carefully even. “Now answer the question.”

“Yes, we’re having an affair.”

I make a few notes in my notepad. “How did it start?”

“What are you accusing me of here?” he counters. “So you found my fingerprints in her bedroom? How about the severed head? Or anywhere in or around the cop car?” He leans in, holding my gaze. “I didn’t kill Jasper or your officer friends, so you have nothing on me and no reason to keep me here. No DNA evidence to link me to the murders.”

“With all due respect, Mr. Knight, you do have the perfect motive.”

He frowns.

“You were having an affair with Keira.”

“And? How is that a motive for killing my friends? Kit, Jasper, and Jessica? The fucking principal? You’re clutching at straws, Officer Wells, and you know it.”

“Okay, fine.” I hold my hands up placatingly. “Who do you think has the motive to go on a murder spree?”

King stares at me as if I have three heads. I’m only asking because sometimes, not always, killers are more comfortable talking about their crimes in the third person.

“How the fuck would I know?” he snaps.

It’s the first crack in King’s mask. The first sign of emotion.

I tap the thick folder in front of me. “We have good reason to believe the killer is someone who has access to Keira.”

King says nothing as he continues staring at me.

“Her stepfather and her boyfriend are missing. Two people who are close to her.”

Riveiro speaks up.“Youare close to her.”

“What are you saying?” King asks, his unrelenting gaze landing on her stern face. “That I’ll go missing or that you think I killed all those people?”

“I think you know more than you let on.”

“And I think you’re under so much fucking pressure from the media frenzy that you’re willing to throw just about anyone under the bus at this point. But the truth is, you’re nowhere near catching this lunatic. You hauled me in here because you found my fingerprints in Keira’s bedroom, and I’ve told you that we fuck. So naturally, my fingerprints will be all over her room. If you don’t believe me, ask her yourself.”

“Do you fuck any other girls from school, King?”

I bite back a laugh at the unimpressed, no-nonsense tone in Riveiro’s feminine voice.

“No, I don’t,” he replies, drawing out the vowels. “But if you’re going to point fingers, Liam fucked around behind Keira’s back. The guy is not short of enemies or girls that are obsessed with him.”

Riveiro looks in my direction, but I keep my gaze solely focused on King.

This is new information to us.

“Who did he sleep with?” I ask carefully.

“You assume I know?”

“It was a bold statement to make.”
