And then I hear, “Did you just tap my nose?”

“Booped, Jane. Iboopedyour nose.”

That’s fucking it.

The nurse is still saying something as I step around her and stalk down the hallway.

Couldn’t give a shit what it is or was because that fucking doctor is itching to get into Saige’s pants, and that is not fucking happening.

I walk faster.

CHAPTER 5

SAIGE

Imeet Kade’s gray eyes for a beat and then the spot beside him. “Where’s Dariel?”

He gives me a long look, steps inside the hospital room, and pulls the door closed behind him with a soft snick. “Having quiet time. The doctor…”

My face flushes hot enough that my cheeks must resemble cherry tomatoes. “I wasn’t—”

“I know,” Kade interrupts as he stalks over to me with ground-eating strides and a dark glare creasing his brow. “Buthemost definitelywas.”

So, it wasn’t just in my head. Harley was flirting with me.

“Why would he?” I ask, frowning.

Kade slides a hand under my hair, pressing his fingers against the nape of my neck, and lowers his head to kiss me hard on the lips. “Because you’re you, angel.”

He says it like I’m something special. More and more, I believe him when I didn’t believe I ever could. Not after Rylan spent years convincing me that I was little more than a possession he was free to do with whatever he wanted.

Licking my lips, I blink up at him. “And that means?”

His gray eyes grow dark, changing to a deep gunmetal gray, and as if he can’t stop himself, he dips his head again and gives me another kiss. This one lingers. It’s a little sweeter than I’m used to from Kade, but it’s not soft, and I want more of it. Gripping the waistband of his sweats, I lean into him.

“The doctor is smart enough to see a good thing worth having.”

I’m almost positive I feel myself melt at his compliment.

I’m smiling up at him when I realize I let Harley leave without telling me when we could see Aden. He couldn’t have gone far, so I can probably catch up to him if I hurry. Peeling my hands from Kade’s pants, I move to get up.

“Shit, I forgot to ask Harley about seeing Aden. He said —”

Kade steps closer, grips me by the top of my arms, and nudges me back to the edge of the bed. “What did he say about your pain?”

I sigh as I glance over his shoulder. “I’m okay, Kade. It’s just a bruise.”

He stares at me without expression, and then he takes a step back, dropping his hands to the hem of my shirt. “Let me see.”

If Kade gets one look at the size of my bruise, he will never let me walk anywhere again. After he’s done ordering me to stay put, he will grab another doctor from the hallway—by force, if necessary—and drag them in here before demanding they fix me or he’ll rip out their throat.

This future is so clear to me that I swear I can see it all play out in my mind, so I grip the hem of my shirt and hold on for dear life. “It’s nothing you need to see.”

His eyes narrow in suspicion. “Angel…”

“I’mfine.”

“Then what did he mean about scans?”
