“Something smells amazing in here,” Colter said, walking into the kitchen when he returned from his office.

I looked over my shoulder. The sight of him always gave me butterflies, but I was still upset that he’d discarded my opinions like that.

“Look, Liv,” Colter said, coming into the kitchen. “I know you’re trying to look out for me.”

“It’s worth looking into it,” I pointed out. “What do you have to lose?”

“It’s not that simple. Mykel has been there for me through so much. He and Rory were there for me when I lost my parents, and to think that he might be someone who did me dirty…” Colter swallowed hard. “I’ll see what I can find, okay?”

I nodded. “I just want to help.”

“I know.”

I smiled at him, and he planted a kiss on my lips.

“I thought I’d surprise you with a homecooked meal.”

“It’s definitely a surprise,” Colter said and looked into the mixer at the batter I whipped up for the dessert. “Can I taste this?”

I nodded, and he scooped some of the batter out, sticking his finger into his mouth.

“Oh, this is good. You have all kinds of hidden talents, huh?”

I giggled. “Yeah, you could say that.”

Colter chuckled and walked to the breakfast nook. Instead of sitting in the seats, he sat on the table instead.

“How was your day?” I asked.

“Yeah, fine… no new incidents, so there’s that.” He looked troubled. “I just wish I could get a bit of a lead on what the hell is going on.”

I hesitated.

“What?” he asked, noticing I wanted to say something.

“I know you don’t agree with me, but I still think you should at least look into Mykel.”

Colter rolled his eyes. “Why are we back on this?”

“Because he stole documents from you.”

“What?”

“I saw him do it. He came here, took pages from the file you left behind, and disappeared again.”

Colter shook his head. “He was probably getting something for me.”

“Did you ask him to get it?”

Colter didn’t answer, which was an answer in itself.

“Look into it and see if there’s something there. If there’s not, no harm, no foul, right?”

Colter hopped off the tabletop.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Because I haven’t been a part of this picture for long enough?” I challenged.
