Because she couldn’t keep breaking for him.

CHAPTER SIX

THEFOURDAYSfollowing his departure from Scotland were like hell.

He didn’t compare it to hell lightly. He had lived in hell before. At that very estate. He had lived it that day his mother had died. The day that he had seen his younger brother. Cold and still.

Dead before he even drew breath.

Everything good he’d known had died that day.

He knew all about hell. Most assuredly that it was a place on earth. He did not doubt that for a moment. But being without Jessie... Having made the decision to step away from her and the child...

In this decision he’d discovered a new level of hell.

And when he’d descended into those depths previously it had been beyond his control. This was not.

He could change it. He had the power.

He was no longer a child held hostage in the Highlands. He had ascended on his own, taken his status and little else out into the world and built an empire not apart from his father—better—an empire to spite him.

He could go back.

But for what?

For her?

He’d had to walk away.

It was the only way to spare them both.

Because what lay on the other side of this...

He had gone to her because he had to see. Or perhaps because he’d simply needed to seeher. It had been foolish.

But he had gone.

It was hell. But he’d been with her. He’d known he wouldn’t stay.

She didn’t need him.

She’d wanted him gone. She’d made that clear when she’d declared the child wasn’t his.

Or perhaps she was just giving you a choice?

It didn’t matter.

He had done what he’d had to. He had done what was best.

If he had thought for a moment that his presence in the life of his child would...

If he had thought for one moment that he could be of good. That he could do something good as a father. But the problem was he didn’t believe in the benevolence of fathers in general.

You left her.

He had.

Unbidden, images of their last time together flooded his mind and infused his veins with fire. He’d made love to her again because he’d been unable to stop himself. Because when it had been clear she wanted him as he wanted her, he’d been powerless against it.
