“Pretend, huh?”
“Well, not anymore. He called me yesterday and he’s going to tell her how he feels and hopefully they’ll be all loving it up together soon.”
“You’re a romantic, aren’t you?”
“It’s pretty much a requirement at our house. Though somehow I think Wade got an inoculation for it when he was little. But my mama lives for sappy holiday romantic movies. And the only books she ever mails me and Wade are romance novels.”
I laugh out loud. “Seriously, I love your mom.”
“Yeah, she’s pretty awesome.”
We’re quiet for a few minutes and then I get my first glimpse of the water, out my window to the right. I gasp like a complete dork. “There it is. What is my mother ever talking about? It’s beautiful.”
“I think your mother has blinders on when it comes to beauty. She seems to have missed it right in front of her with you.” He squeezes my hand, reminding me that we’re still holding hands.
I’m holding hands with the hottest guy I’ve ever seen. Like he could be on the cover of a calendar. Or a cover of one of those super sexy romance books with the guys and all their abs and that ‘V’ thing, that frankly I thought was a photoshop invention. But as I’ve now seen it on a real, flesh and blood man, I can attest to the fact that it is real.
“You’re incredibly sexy. I just wanted to say that before I lost my nerve.” I blurt out the words, but keep my eyes glued to the gorgeous water we’re passing. Pelicans fly in formation, looking very much like prehistoric creatures. Periodically one will swoop down and dive into the water.
“I think you’re incredibly sexy too, sugar.” He brings my hand up to his mouth and kisses it.
I might have had a baby orgasm just from that. I’m not sure because my experience with orgasms is really pretty limited.
He exits the freeway and then drives down several smaller roads until we get to a hotel. Then he pulls in. He drives up to that little carport area.
“I’m gonna go get us a room. You stay here and I’ll be out in a few.”
So I do what he says and ten minutes later he comes back, jumps into the driver’s seat and takes us around to the backside of the hotel.
“It took some finagling, but I got us a beach front room.”
“Remy, you didn’t have to do that.”
“Hey, we’re gonna do this Texas beach trip in style. Even if it’s only going to be a part of a single day and one night.”
He parks and grabs our bags, then we’re walking into the small, standard hotel room. Two beds, a TV on the wall across and a bathroom.
“They said there was a mini fridge in there.” He nods to the dresser. “But let’s go dip your pretty feet in the Gulf of Mexico. I think it’s actually gonna rain soon so we might want to hurry.”
Excitement bubbles out me and I squeal a little. “I’m sorry, I’m a dork. I’m really excited about this.”
“Well, let’s go, sugar.” He walks to the back of the little room, and where I thought was the bathroom, is actually a door that opens out to a tiny patio, and the bathroom is on the opposite wall.
“There it is, just right out our door.” I grab his hand and pull him closer to me.
He laughs and then picks me up, tosses me over his shoulder like I weigh nothing, then he’s running out on the sand.
“Remy, put me down, you crazy man. You’re gonna break your back.”
When he does finally put me down, it’s the first time my toes touch the water. This close up, the water is more brown than blue, but it’s still beautiful. Just looking out there and watching the waves crest and crash.
I inhale deeply, filling my lungs with that salty air. My eyes fill with tears. Then Remy’s arms wrap around me, like he could read my mind and just knew I needed a hug.
“This is perfect. Thank you.”
He leans forward and kisses my cheek. “It is my pleasure.”
We walk some, hand-in-hand, our feet in the surf. He lifts me up over a big clear-ish, gelatinous blob.
