“Not Bailey. Never mind,” I said when Lexi glared at me.
“You’re all adults and have very promising careers. You should have been able to do that on your own. At least you would think so. But as I got to know you and your family, I could see how Walker just never thought to get involved with anyone, you would never think anyone would be what you wanted, and Mac only wanted one woman and needed the push to go after her. It’s insane but it’s also very sweet. I don’t think I would’ve seen that if I hadn’t gotten to know your family the way I did.
“Not that I’m saying what your father did was right. Nor that I’m not going to throw it in his face every time you do something wrong. But I can see why he did it.”
I wanted to say something about her being around to give my father a bad time, but I held my tongue. She was on a roll and just like she let me have my say, it was my turn to let her have hers.
“He loves and cares about you. You all do. When I first got the assignment to do the article, I was expecting to find a family that was self-absorbed. Who was only interested in making money and spending money. And with you, I expected to find the playboy who only cared about sleeping with as many women as he could.
“But you weren’t like that. None of you were. You were all so kind, understanding, and welcoming to me. I got to see your family as a whole, and in turn, I got to know you as well. I don’t think I would have understood you in the way that I do, if I hadn’t gotten to know them too. To come to love them.”
I lifted my eyebrow at her as she said love but I didn’t say anything.
“And as crazy and insane as your family is. I would have to be just as crazy and insane to want to be a part of it. If I was a smart woman, I would run from you, from this family and never see or talk to you again. But I’m not a smart woman, at least not when it comes to you. Because I am just as completely, totally, and head over heels in love with you.
“It wasn’t something that I was looking for. In fact, it was the exact opposite. Yet, I can see that you’re it for me. I’d imagined what the man I would fall in love with would be like and he certainly wasn’t you. But you’re the only man I can imagine my life with, you’re the only one I want to share it with.”
“Are you sure?” I asked.
“No,” she laughed and I did too. “Yes. Yes. I’m sure. I love you Jack Daniel Bennett. I shouldn’t. I’m a fool to be, but I’m a fool in love with you. And as crazy as it sounds. I couldn’t be happier.”
“Me either. Because you’re stuck with me, Alexandria Ricci. Now that I have you. Now that I know you love me. I’m never, ever letting you go.”
She stepped towards me and into my arms. My arms immediately went around hers, as I looked at her, I saw all the love and happiness she felt for me reflected in her eyes and I only hoped that half of what I was feeling towards her was reflected in mine.
“Promise?” she asked.
“Promise,” I said and dropped my head down and kissed her.
Epilogue
Remy
“Is everything ready?” MaryBeth asked Remy as she walked into the kitchen.
“I think so. Or as good as it’s going to be,” he said.
“It better be. They’re all going to be here in a few minutes,” she said and patted him affectionately on my ass.
“Hey!” he called.
Remy grabbed MaryBeth and pulled her to him before she could get out of the kitchen. “You can’t touch the goods and then just walk away,” he teased.
She laughed as he kissed her and was still smiling when they broke away. Love for the woman who had given him four wonderful children and a life full of love and happiness filled him.
“Don’t give me that look. We have the whole family coming over,” she said and slapped him affectionately on the shoulder.
“Are Lexi and JD going to make it?”
“He just called. Their jetlag wasn’t too bad and they are excited to see everyone,” she said.
“Are they sure?”
“They’ve been sitting on a beach in Morocco for two weeks on their honeymoon. The only reason they might be tired is in ways we don’t want to know about.”
“Fair enough.”
“Plus, I think they’re excited about seeing baby James,” she said.
