Hearing him talk about why he liked me to my family filled me with so much pride.
I got excited when I heard him mention his plans if we ever had kids together. If my mom hadn't interrupted, he would have been aware that part of that fantasy was already a reality in my womb.
There was a happily ever after in sight, and I could smell it. No, I could taste it.
When my aunt asked to see him, I was really unsettled.
To be honest, I was unsettled the moment they laid their eyes on each other.
It seemed a lot more than just simply knowing him as a doctor and knowing her as a patient's relative.
But this time, I wasn't at peace.
I waited a little and decided to go check on them myself. I was feeling thirsty, so I grabbed a bottle of water then looked for them.
They weren't in the kitchen or the basement, so I assumed they would be in the guest room.
Then I overheard them.
"I thought we were going to be something special together." Aunty Hannah said.
"Hannah…"
"But you clearly didn't want that," she continued, "I was in love with you, Adam. You knew that. And you had feelings for me too. Why didn't you just…try? For me?"
I couldn't believe my ears.
"And now you're dating his daughter too?" she asked, and I could hear the disgust in her tone.
"I didn't know," he replied, "I honestly didn't know you were all related."
"I know the only thing that stopped both of us from being together was the fact that you felt guilty about my brother dying," she pointed out.
"I should have been able to save him."
I didn't understand what was going on. Were they involved with each other?
"I'm sorry," he apologized.
"When… you slept with me last month…" she continued, "You were trying to use me to forget about her, weren't you?"
Last month?
It was around that period when we had started to bond.
"Hannah…I…"
"Just answer the question, Adam," she insisted.
"Yes, I was trying to forget about her," he said.
His reply shook me.
He was trying to forget about me?
The water bottle fell out of my grasp, drawing their attention to me. I said nothing and left. I didn’t bother stopping even when Adam called after me.
I returned to my room and cuddled up with my teddy bears, contemplating how stupid I could be.
