I don't know why, but something about the way he made that statement worried me and made me uncomfortable.
"Yeah, but I still feel bad," I said.
"Oh, and you don't like owing a debt," he sighed, "How about a lunch date then?"
"A date?"
"Alunchdate," he corrected, "You treat me to lunch and we call it even."
"Deal then," I said.
"But…" he said as he put his arm around my shoulder and pulled me close to him, "I'll warn you that my appetite has grown quite large since the last time."
"Please have mercy on my wallet," I pleaded with a sigh.
"You're back," a familiar voice said.
We looked up and saw Adam standing in front of us.
He wore a turtleneck sweater tucked into denim with a pair of sunglasses, his car keys in his right hand.
He looked stunningly sexy.
Bad, Crystal!
"Sir! It's lovely to see you," Harold greeted cheerfully, "You look great.”
"Why thank you," Adam smiled, but I could tell it was forced.
"Thank you for giving the okay for my Crystal here," Harold said as he tussled my hair, "I hope she hasn't given you any troubles."
I noticed Adam's eyebrow twitch when Harold said, 'My Crystal.'
"She has been excellent. She exceeded my expectations, surpassing every other independent doctor I've worked with," Adam replied while giving me a knowing look.
"She's the best after all," Harold squeezed me and I noticed Adam’s twitch again.
"Indeed," Adam said before turning to me, "Dr. Richards, if you aren't so busy later maybe we can go over your performance report. We weren't able to finish it the last time."
Nor were we able to start.
But I didn't say it out loud.
"I'm afraid I'll be very busy. Harold and I have already planned to hang out today. I hope you don't mind?" I spoke.
"No… no, I don't," he replied.
"Well, if it helps, you can check on the performance reports of the other doctors," I advised, although I did mean something else. And judging by the annoyed smile he gave me, I could tell he understood what I meant.
"Speaking of which, when am I supposed to submit mine?" Harold asked.
"You'll deal with that later," I said as I pulled him along to our office.
Adam continued watching us until I got into the office and shut the door.
"Did something happen between you two?" Harold asked.
"Nothing happened," I answered as I sat down.
