My breathing became unsteady as I got lost in thought.
“How did he do it again?” I asked as my left hand found its way into my pants.
I continued kissing my fingers before opening my mouth.
I focused on the diagram…the tongue.
His was wet, soft and…I had bitten it.
“Ah…” I pulled my fingers out of my mouth and remembered it. The image of his confused face after I had bitten him was priceless. “Serves you right, you asshole. Stealing a kiss from me just because I showed you a little vulnerability. I should have bitten your tongue in half.”
I laughed at my comment.
“Dr. Richards?” a nurse called as she walked into the office, “Is this a good time?”
“Yeah, how may I be of help, Sarah?” I asked.
Sarah Matthew had been a nurse here for two years. She was fairly new to the hospital but was asked by Catherine to help me out. She was a good listener and very helpful in organizing my day. In a way she was like my own secretary and friend.
“Uh…are you sure this is a good time?” Her cheeks were rosy red.
“Yeah, I am. You’re all red. Fever perhaps?” I asked.
“No, I mean...I should have knocked, that’s all,” she replied as she pointed towards me.
I followed her gaze to my left hand still in my pants and still on my crotch.
I pulled it out gently and quietly took some wipes and cleaned my hands.
I want to die.
“Sorry you had to see that,” I chuckled nervously.
“No, no, it’s all right,” she said as she closed the door behind her, “I also get uhm...distractedduring office hours. Although I use the restroom.”
“Please don’t say anymore, or else I might really die of embarrassment,” I covered my face.
She let out a hearty laugh, “You’re something else really.”
Sarah acted like someone I knew, a family member actually. She was the second person besides Harold I was comfortable with.
“So, here’s the research papers you wanted,” she said as she handed me the stack, “I’m really sorry about the patient you lost.”
“It’s fine. I can’t keep moping about it forever,” I said as I received and glanced through the papers, “Who wrote this?”
“Oh, uh, Dr. Adam Hunt,” she replied.
Brilliant… this man was brilliant.
He was detailed about his work; quick stabilizing methods for emergency patients, how to tell if an operation was going to fail and how to avoid or delay it. There was more knowledge in these papers than most of the courses I had studied for an entire semester.
“This will be enough,” I said.
“Well then, I better get going,” she said as she got up to leave, “You can continue where you left off.”
I turned red from embarrassment, “I told you not to talk about it.”
I grabbed my cup of coffee and got up to follow her because I needed the air and I’d been on my ass the entire day.
