"I don't think she'd believe you that easily," she said.
"But you believe me, don't you?" I asked.
"Barely, because I know Amanda was your favorite," she replied.
My shoulders dropped at her reply.
"Adam, you need to understand that this is a consequence of your actions up to this point," she said, "I usually stayed out of your relationships or affairs because I simply wanted to mind my business. But when you and Crystal started being together, I thought… I thought it was finally happening, you changing."
"And I did change. I swear it," I said, "If only I had played it safe and told the security not to allow any of them in here unless it was an emergency."
"If I wasn't…ahem...busyyesterday, I could have gotten Amanda to stay out of the office," she said.
"No, don't blame yourself for this. Yesterday was a defining moment for both of you. You deserved that moment of joy," I said.
"Thanks, boss. But as for Crystal, it's best you leave her alone for a while," she advised, “A broken heart is a delicate affair, so she needs time to make sure everything's okay with her. It'll take a while, but if you love her, you'll wait."
"But while I wait, that prick Harold will be getting his chances with her," I clenched my fists as I remembered why I was angry, "Maybe I should have him fired. That way Crystal can heal in peace without him getting in her head or worse… in her heart."
"If you abuse your power, you know she'll hate you, right?" She sighed.
"Yeah, but still…”
“If she loves you, I don’t think another person can easily occupy that place in her heart,” she said, cutting me off.
I looked away.
"Trust her, Adam," she advised.
"She doesn't even trust me anymore," I said in a whisper.
Crystal
"Thanks, Harold," I said as he held the chair out for me.
We were off duty and since there was no longer any reason for me to turn down his request, I decided to have dinner with him.
"I'm just glad you and I can finally have some alone time," he said with a smile as he took his seat.
He called for the waiter and placed his order.
I remember one time Adam had asked that we go out to dinner somewhere, but I had been worried about his image.
He had offered to rent out the entire restaurant but…
"You really go all out when flirting with a woman, don't you?" I teased.
"Flirting? If renting out the restaurant is the price to have a nice dinner with you, then I should buy the restaurant," he replied with a goofy grin.
"For the most powerful man in Richmond and one many regard as a genius, you're not very bright, are you?" I asked.
He held my face in his hands, "Why think when I have you to do that for me?"
My face felt warm as I recalled that day. We had ended up ordering takeout and going to a park to eat together.
It had been good.
"I take it you want the dumplings then, considering how hearing them made you smile," Harold said, interrupting my thoughts.
