Each one vibrating through my body.
And so did his fingertips as they grazed the side of my arm, attempting to grab it.
Fear pulsed through me at the touch of his hand, and the sound of his voice confirmed that I wasn’t making this up.
I wasn’t being dramatic.
This man was after me.
And if I let him catch me, I didn’t know what would happen, but I didn’t think I’d ever be running this path again.
Or running at all.
Oh God.
I didn’t know where I found the stamina or the extra speed, but I began to shift my body to the right and left, dodging back and forth so I wasn’t just a reach away. I also wasn’t moving in a pattern, so he couldn’t prepare which way he needed to move.
The only thing I could do at this moment was to keep going and make things difficult for him.
Deny him.
And that was something I knew a lot about.
It was working. I could hear his frustration every time he tried to grab me and missed.
His failed attempts resulting in a drawn-out grunt.
All that did was encourage me to go faster.
And my long strides and my brisk pace brought me straight to the entrance that led up to the hotel, so I veered off the path and sprinted toward the building.
When I reached the deck of the pool, I sidestepped around the lounge chairs to make his approach more difficult.
I could hear his feet.
He was so close that I could almost taste his breath.
But I was almost there.
I just had to keep going.
When I got to the final row of lounge chairs, I kicked one out in front of him, forcing him to either hurdle the wide lounger or go around it, which gained me several paces on him.
That was all I needed.
A short lead.
And I took off toward the entrance, my lungs straining, my muscles throbbing, and I sprinted the remaining distance until I was gripping the door handle so hard that the frame around it shook, the glass threatening to crack.
I didn’t clutch it for long.
I released the metal bar once my body was through the doorway, and I rushed into the lobby.
The freezing air-conditioning hit my sweaty skin, and I felt like I’d entered a freezer.
I was quivering.
Every single part of me.
