I had to keep going.

Pushing.

I had to run to safety.

On one side of the path was the beach. The other was lined with hotels and condo buildings, each with small inlets that allowed direct access to their properties. Most of them were gated and required keys or codes. I knew that because there had been plenty of times in the past when I had to stop to use the restroom and tried to open many of the locked gates.

But there were a handful that were open to the path, and one was a hotel that was less than a quarter of a mile away.

Am I silly to think I need to stop there?

Is the man really following me?

Or is this in my head? Born out of anxiety?

That we are just two people out for a run?

I took another peek over my shoulder.

He’d gotten closer.

Fuck.

And the expression that tugged on his lips didn’t sit well with me.

It caused my heart to pound even harder.

Because his top lip was lifted, his teeth showing, like he was snarling.

Animalistic.

And he wasn’t weaving to either side to move past me. He was still aimed right for me.

My entire body shook.

I went into panic mode.

There were hardly any other people on this path. A few sitting on the benches that I ran by. Some were on the beach, parked to watch the sunrise. If the man wanted to do something—hurt me, abduct me—he could easily get away with it, and no one would see.

And due to his size and the strength I saw in his muscles, he would certainly win.

I needed to go faster.

I needed to run harder.

I needed to get to the hotel.

It wasn’t that much farther up ahead.

I just had to push myself another hundred or so yards, and I would be there.

I’d be able to call my security team at Lush and have one of them pick me up—

“Get over here.”

Three words.

Snarled from behind me.
