“You said no one was gonna have him if you couldn’t. So, you grabbed the steering wheel and Kyler lost control of the car,” I said.
“Prove it,” she snarled.
“I don’t have to prove it. I know the truth. And Kyler knows the truth. When he wakes up, he’ll confirm it.”
She sprang to her feet and moved within inches of my face. I braced myself for a slap. But she only leaned in seething. “I don’t know what you’ve got going on with my boyfriend, but don’t fuck with me.” A scary smile spread across her face. “I’d hate to trip over one of these wires.” Her eyes moved to the ones attached to the machines keeping Kyler alive.
The hair on the back of my neck stood on end. I didn’t doubt her words. She’d grabbed the wheel and put Kyler in the situation he was currently in. But the truth remained. I couldn’t prove it. I had the word of two spirits. And, she could pull the plug on him at any time.
She stood back up, straightening out her shirt that had wrinkled in her attempt to intimidate me. She said nothing as she walked out of the room with her spirit following her.
I turned to look at Kyler with wide eyes. “She’s insane.”
He slid down the wall until he was sitting with his knees bent and his face buried in his arms.
I rushed over to him and sat beside him, rubbing my hand gently over his back. “Is it happening again?”
He didn’t respond.
“Jesus, Kyler. Are you okay?”
He didn’t respond.
“Kyler, look at me,” I said, urging his arms away from his face. “Are you all right?”
“She did this.”
“We’ll make sure she’s punished.”
He scoffed. “How?”
“I don’t know….”
“What good does knowing the truth do us?” he asked, frustration dripping from his words.
I hated that I didn’t have the answer. That I couldn’t make it all better.
“Everything okay in here?” Mr. Fletcher asked from the doorway.
“What makes you ask?” I said from the floor, knowing how strange I must’ve looked down there.
His thumb hitched behind him. “Melanie just stormed out claiming she didn’t feel well.”
I stood up. “I don’t doubt that.” I glanced to Kyler who read my thoughts and nodded his consent. I looked back to Mr. Fletcher. “She caused Kyler’s accident.”
His head tilted to the side. “Come again?”
“Kyler remembered everything,” I explained.
“Jesus Christ,” he said, shocked.
“I’m so sorry to tell you like this, but we just found out and she knows we know,” I said.
“What’s going on?” Mrs. Fletcher asked, appearing in the doorway.
“Melanie caused Ky’s accident,” Mr. Fletcher explained.
Her stunned eyes jumped to mine. “What?!”
