“You did.” I laughed. “But it turned out to be the right thing for her. I’ll always protect her.”
“And it turned out well for you, brother.” Gio slapped my back. “She makes you a better man.”
“I can’t argue that.” I shrugged. “I needed her.”
“Speaking of brothers.” Rocco softened his stance. “I have a favor to ask one of you, but I understand if you’re not willing to help me.”
“What is it?” He piqued my interest.
“I’m ready to take a DNA test,” he said. “I could ask my father to provide a sample to prove that we are not a match, but that wouldn’t tell me who I am. If one of you were to do it, I’d know for sure.”
“You want to know if you’re a Bilotti.” I glanced at Gio. “Is that something you’re really ready for?”
“I need to know who I am.” He tightened his jaw. “No matter what I find out.”
His admission wasn’t easy.
“That’s understandable.” I didn’t envy his position. He was raised as a Torrio, but now his whole life could be blown apart. “I would want to know where I came from too.”
“I’ll do it,” Gio said. “I’ll provide the sample.”
I nodded my approval.
“Thank you,” Rocco said. “I know I’m not your favorite person.”
“Let’s see what the test results say.” I looked across the dance floor to find Agent Morgan heading my way. “What the hell?”
“What?” Gio followed my gaze. “What does he want?”
As Carson got closer, Rocco said, “Has he been harassing you?”
“He’s pissed at us because he can’t make any charges against us stick.” Gio shook his head. “He needs to move on. Find another target. We’re not going to make him famous.”
Unless we kill him.
“As long as we’re making money in the city, he’s not going to leave us alone.” If he tried to ruin Luciana’s night, I would kill him. “I don’t need this tonight. Santino’s out of town.”
“I can help you,” Rocco said. “Tell him I’m your attorney. I’ll back him off tonight.”
“It’s not a bad idea.” Gio shrugged. “If it gets him out of here.”
I wasn’t certain I liked the idea, but before I could answer, Carson was in our space.
“Well, look at this.” Carson smirked. “The Bilotti brothers and the Torrio brothers in the same place at the same time. Should the innocent by-standers be concerned when the fall-out happens?”
“There won't be any trouble,” I assured him. “I’m married to his cousin, remember?”
“Oh, right, the arranged marriage.” Carson looked around. “Where is your beautiful wife? I’d like to say happy birthday to her.”
“I’ll relay the message.” I glared at him. “No need for you to hang around.”
“I’d like to stay and ask you a few questions,” Carson said. “It shouldn’t take too long.”
“Anything you have to ask us can wait until tomorrow.” Gio motioned toward the exit. “Why don’t you reach out to our attorney in the morning?”
“I hear he’s out of town.” Carson focused on me. “That is unfortunate for you.”
“It would be if I didn’t have another attorney.” I looked at Rocco. “Can you handle this?”
