“Yes, fine,” she said quickly, smoothing down her clothes. Her car had finally arrived. “Thank you…”
“My name’s Carter,” I offered, extending my hand.
She looked at my hand and hesitated for a while. Then she shook it very quickly, causing an electric jolt through my skin when we touched. I was taken aback.
“Thank you, Carter,” she said formally. “I’m Leigh.”
“You’re welcome, Leigh.”
She didn’t say anything further. She did not inquire about why I was there or what I had to do with the security personnel. I could see that she was curious, but she held back and simply left in her car without another look back.
I couldn’t help but feel a hint of disappointment. But nevertheless, we will most likely have more encounters in the future, especially in our neighborhood.
I found myself looking forward to it.
Chapter 5
LEIGH
Finally, theweekendcameagain. I decided to forego the scheduled renovations I had for that Saturday as my way of silently thanking my next-door neighbor for coming to my rescue at Prime Luxent Hotel.
Staring at my vacuum cleaner, I realized it’s going to be noisy as well, but perhaps not as much. Anyway, I could just probably close all the windows and doors to make sure the sound would remain inside my property.
As I went to do the cleaning work I had set out for the day, my mind kept drifting back to Carter. I could picture how his stunning face had looked when he confronted that rude man. I could still recall how his touch had jostled my nerves and caused my blood to rush when we shook hands.
I wondered what he’d been doing there that day. I’d always figured he had some sort of nerdy job online. But now I wasn’t so sure anymore.
I remembered that look he’d given the security personnel as if he was the one in command. Perhaps he worked as head of security there. Or maybe he was a secret spy.
I giggled, imagining him in a spy outfit. He’d certainly look sexy in one.
Suddenly, I was shocked at where my thoughts were heading. I silently reprimanded myself and then laughed awkwardly out loud.
I hadn’t even realized I had been vacuuming the same spot on the carpet over and over again!
An hour later, I was done cleaning the entire first floor. I went to work on de-cluttering my bedroom.
For the 8th time that day, I wondered what Carter did for a living. I peeked out the window, hoping to catch a glimpse of him. I saw his car out there earlier, but I couldn’t see him in his backyard or office or anywhere else from my house.
Then without warning, just as I was about to turn away from my window, I heard a bunch of squealing voices from his area. My eyes followed a group of women with big hairdos and colorful, shimmering outfits, cheerfully chatting, laughing, and joking around as they sauntered to the backyard and began hanging out by the pool.
What the hell!
I soon realized that these people looked the same as the ones I saw on the streets when I had first arrived in Las Vegas. They were not actual women, but they were drag queens.
I watched them discreetly behind my curtains with fascination and curiosity.
After a while, Carter came out looking quite dashing in nothing but a pair of drawstring pants. His tanned and well-built torso glistened in the sunlight. He was wearing a pair of dark sunglasses but had a serious expression on his face. I couldn’t help but stare at him. Even from afar, his extraordinarily striking looks stood out.
The drag queens began surrounding him and swooning over him. Then to my bemusement, they launched into a song and dance number to entertain him.
It was so strange. I didn’t know what to think of it.
When they were done, he talked to them and they all turned serious. I couldn’t hear what he was saying, but they were all hanging on to his every word.
He went inside and they all seemed to relax again.
I saw him go into his home office and position himself behind his computer--- as was his common practice. But after a few minutes, two thugs came in. They were dressed in leather jackets and matching pants. One had a gold hoop earring on his left ear.
