She only hesitated a second before turning to run, but it was too late. Straight into the arms of the officers who were waiting. “I don’t know what you people aretalking about,” she shouted. “I didn’t do anything wrong.”

The officer spoke her rights as he walked her through the ER toward the outside, everyone gaping as they went. Kyle looked at me, stunned. “What the fuck?”

“I know, and I’m sorry. Can you do lunch soon?”

He shook his head. “Girl, for this? I’m free any time. Call me and tell me when. Preferably as soon as fucking possible.”

“I will. I really need to go see Anna right now, but I’ll call you. Tomorrow, maybe the day after, okay?”

“Okay.” He pulled me into a hug. “It’s really good to see you, and based on that… I’m glad you’re safe.”

“I’m very safe now.” I glanced back at my Alphas. “You’re not going to believe half of it.”

Someone called his name across the ER, and he needed to go, but he gave me a long, disbelieving look. Frankly, everything that happened? I wasn’t sure hewouldbelieve me.

“Do we have to do anything for her?” I asked.

“Not at the moment,” Nick said, pulling me to him. “Once she’s charged, maybe. But that’s later.”

I wanted to stay in his arms, but I forced myself to step away and make my way through the hospital to the wing where my sister was a near-permanent resident.

Saint Mercy’s was one of the best hospitals in the country for mysterious illnesses like hers. My Alphas said she could move in with us, and she could be taken care of wherever, but I wanted it to be her choice. Almost like someone who needed to move schools, it was the same. She had friends here and trusted her doctors. I wasn’t going to pull her away from all those things for purely selfish reasons. I of all people understood the comfort of familiarity.

Her door was open, and the nurse at the station, Jessica, waved to me. “I need to go in first,” I said.

“We’re here if you need us,” Sebastian said. “Love you.”

“I love you.”

My sister slept. She looked a lot like me when I was younger. Dark hair, tan skin, though hers was paler because of her illness. I glanced at her vitals. She was doing fine.

I smoothed her hair back from her face, and she stirred, sighing. “I know, I know, I need to work on actually sleeping at night,” she mumbled.

“Yes, you do.”

Her eyes flew open. “Sel? Oh my god what are you doing here? They told me you got some kind of amazing internship or some shit and couldn’t even say goodbye.”

My eyes filled with tears, and I leaned down to kiss her on the forehead. “That didn’t happen, but I’m here now, and I’ll tell you everything. A lot of things are going to change.”

“In a bad way?”

“No,” I laughed. “In a very, very good way. At least I hope so. And the first thing I have to do is introduce you to some people.”

Anna raised an eyebrow. “People?”

“Alphas.”

She gasped. “Oh my god.”

I squeezed her hand. “I hope you have time for a long story, little sis, because it’s going to take a while.”

“Where exactly am I going to go?”

We laughed together, and god it felt good. “I’ll be right back, okay?”

“Okay.” Her eyes sparkled, and I went to get my Alphas, happy that the worst of everything was finally, finally behind us.
