She was surrounded by two lion shifters. Tripp recognized them from Nick’s agency.
Amelia padded up to him, rubbing her nose all over his face. Then she nuzzled him. Tripp inhaled deeply.
Where is Craig?she asked through the psychic link they shared.
He disappeared through there.Tripp nodded his head at the smooth, flawless wall. There was no hint that it was really a door, aside from the switch.
The lion shifters went to the flat surface, each inspecting it.
Let’s go,Amelia said quickly. They’ll get your mother to safety. We have more shifters to take down out there. And I am not letting Craig leave here alive.
Even in his head, Amelia’s voice was dangerously cold. They both took off down the hallway, and Tripp followed Amelia’s lead.
He couldn’t help but marvel at her body as if it was the first time he had seen her. He had missed her so much. The leopard’s body was wiry and muscular and covered with a thick layer of fur.
Her strength was obvious with every step she took. Her eyes shone deadly in the low light of the building.
He also felt her fury through the psychic bond they shared.
She was furious at Craig for putting him in danger. And Tripp realized she was furious with herself for letting it happen.
He reached out to her through the psychic link. You can’t blame yourself for this. His voice was gentle. He nudged her with his muzzle.
Amelia turned to him, her large cat’s eyes shining. He could almost see her human face beneath the layers of fur and muscle.
I know I can’t.Her voice was low and dark. But I do. It was my job to protect you. You’re my mate. And I stupidly thought Craig would go away now that you were back and in good health.
It isn’t anyone’s fault except Craig’s,Tripp said firmly. Right then, they heard the sound of dozens of footsteps. Pounding against the floor.
The shifters were coming right at them. When they turned, they saw the two wolf shifters who belonged to the agency. Behind them came the lion shifters. He quickly surmised that his mother had been taken to safety.
They were in a long, dimly lit hallway. The sounds of paws pounding toward them came from all sides.
Amelia and Tripp stayed side by side as they assessed the situation.
Okay, she said after a few minutes. We can do this. We can do this together. But we need to find Craig.
Tripp nodded in agreement.
There were six enemies in front of them. Two bear shifters and four wolves. They were large and burly and looked massive to Tripp.
They attacked first, leaping toward them. Amelia sprang into the air to meet them, and Tripp followed her lead. Together they attacked a wolf shifter. Amelia took him by his paws while Tripp closed his teeth around the shifter’s neck.
They each jerked the shifter with their jaws, and his body came apart. Another shifter came at them.
This time, it was the bear shifter. It growled menacingly at them. Then it swiped at Amelia. Tripp jumped at it before it touched Amelia. He ripped at the bear with his teeth, and chunks of the beast’s flesh went flying. Amelia moved deftly and slid beneath him.
With her claws, she ripped through the bear’s ankles. The shifter howled with pain and stumbled backward.
Amelia pounced while Tripp turned to the other bear shifter. The only thing he thought as they fought was that they had to find Craig. And he had to protect Amelia.
His mate.
They fought side by side, one advancing when the other danced away. Leaping backward while the other pounced forward. It became an easy dance with them exchanging the briefest of instructions through the psychic link.
He’s coming on your right.
Got him.
