I folded my arms over my chest. “What are you doing here, Killian? Look, it’s good that you want to be a part of the baby’s life, but I am not going to move back to New York. Not until the project is finished, and nothing you say or do is going to change my mind—”

“I know.”

“—unless you fire me,” I continued, before trailing off. “Wait, did you just agree with me?”

Killian took another step towards me, his expression growing softer. “I did.”

“Why?”

“Because I meant what I said, Meg.” Killian covered the distance between us, so we were standing chest to chest. “I want to be there for you, and the baby, and if it means having to move to Miami, I will.”

I tilted my head back to stare up at his face, and my heart skipped a beat. “Did you just say you’re going to move to Miami?”

“I did.”

A swell of emotion erupted in the center of my chest, and I felt lightheaded. With a frown, I blinked up at him. “I don’t understand.”

“This project is important to you, and I want the two of us to have a real chance. I know we’ve skipped a few of the steps, but we can always go back and remedy that.”

“But you—you don’t even like me.”

Killian shook his head and took my hands in his. “Meg, you’re one of the smartest people I know except when it comes to me. For some reason, you cannot see that I like you. I’ve always liked you.”

“Since when?”

“Since always,” Killian replied, pausing to flash me a signature smile. “I’ve always had a soft spot for you, but I just didn’t want to admit it to myself.”

“This is some kind of weird fever dream.”

Killian threw his head back to laugh before drawing me to him for a kiss. “You’re not dreaming.”

“You’re not here, in my apartment giving me this big romantic speech,” I muttered, mostly to myself. I drew back and stared at him for a few more seconds before I shook my head. “This must be a dream.”

“Want me to pinch you? I’ve got a few ideas.”

I choked back a laugh. “How can you joke at a time like this?”

“Because I’m trying to tell you how I feel, and you’re not taking me seriously.”

I took an involuntary step back and studied him, with the afternoon sun slanting around him. “We argue a lot, and we rarely see eye to eye on things.”

“I know. It’s the reason why we work.”

“You’re a pain in my ass, and I already know you’ve thought about getting me fired, on several occasions.”

“Guilty as charged. I also know that you feel it too, Meghan. I’ve seen it in your eyes.”

I placed a hand on my stomach and swallowed. “We have to take this seriously, Killian. It’s not just the two of us anymore. There’s a lot to consider.”

“I know, and I know we still have a lot to figure out, but we’ll figure it out together.”

“If you’re doing this just to get me to move back, so help me God, I will throw you out myself, Killian.”

Killian’s expression turned serious. “First of all, you can’t kick me out. Second, that’s not why I’m doing it. I know how important this is to you.”

I raised an eyebrow and said nothing.

“I’ll stay here with you until the project is over.” Killian took both of my hands in his and looked into my eyes. “After that, we can go back to New York or stay here, whatever we decide, we’ll do it together.”
