“What I need is for my guys to have their heads on straight. Yours is compromised because of her, which is fine. You just worry about her and no one else. We can handle ourselves.”

“Thank you,” Chester says. “I’ll let you know once we’re safely settled.”

“Good.”

I hang up. It’s not too often that the men have fallen for Earthling women. A few of them brought with them their wives or girlfriends when we came here to Earth, but for the most part, we’re a brotherhood, a family onto ourselves. We didn’t need anyone else.

Now, we have to stick together more than ever before, or else the Koxians will no longer have a presence here on Earth.

I scowl. This is quickly becoming a nightmare.

I can’t help myself and call up Elden.

“Is she at work?”

“Not anymore, Boss. It’s getting late.”

Is it? My head is spinning, and I’m not sure which way is up anymore.

“Thanks. Nothing going on at the garage?”

“Her shop is nice and sleepy.”

“Good. That’s good.” I hesitate. “How did she seem?”

“Hmm?”

“Is she… scared? Anxious?”

“She seemed to be working hard, as far as I could tell.”

“Did she have a lot of bikes coming in for her to work on?”

“No, not really.”

Fuck. I was afraid this might affect her business. There’s been news report about the shooting, much to my dismay. It’s almost as if Joey wants to draw us out into the open and have everyone looking for us. It’s the last thing any of us needs. What the fuck is he getting at? I swear, if I see him right now, I won’t hesitate. I’ll kill him.

I want to call her, but I don’t know if she unblocked my number or not yet. I don’t want to alarm her either or make her more worried than she probably already is. She has to be so freaked out, terrified, out of her mind…

She didn’t sign up for any of this.

If only she would let me pay for her to run away, hide, start up a business elsewhere under a new name…

But she’s a fighter. She’s not one to back down.

I love that about her.

Fuck. I can’t go there. Not now.

Maybe not ever. If she won’t have be with me… and who could blame her after all of this shit?

My phone rings. I wish she was the one calling me, but she’s not.

It’s Hal.

“What’s going on?” I demand, my tone harsh.

“She’s gone.”
