None of us were alone anymore.
And just like the land, despite the strangeness, it worked.
Sirus squeezed my hand, pulling me away from my thoughts.
I turned around and looked at the platform in the center of the mountain. It was empty, and I frowned, looking around.
“Margo already walked into the land’s heart, and the air didn’t choose her. The group decided to give us some privacy up here, so they asked me to take them to the heart of the fire lands,” Sirus murmured, his fingers stroking my wrist above the place our hands were connected.
“That was thoughtful,” I whispered. “Did Dove go too?”
“She did. She’s never been there, so she was excited.” His lips were curved upward slightly.
“I guess they all think wind is my element too, huh?” I asked him, tilting my head back so our eyes could meet.
“They do.” His smile was soft. “Are you ready?”
I looked back out at the platform. “Honestly, I don’t think I’ll ever be ready for a change like this one. But I do think it’s time.”
He released his grip on my hand.
I took a step toward the platform—it was only a few steps away—and then paused.
Spinning back toward Sirus, I covered the small distance between us and captured his face in my hands, rising up on my tiptoes to kiss him. His arms wrapped around my back, and he pulled me up into the air so he could kiss me better.
Our mouths and tongues danced for a few long moments before he pulled away, his eyes gleaming. “No more delays, Sway.”
“Just had to leave you with a good memory of kissing my human self, in case my fae self is a shitty kisser,” I breathed, squeezing his hand as I stepped away from him.
“I’ll teach your fae self in case you forget,” Storm called after me.
I bit back a grin as I strode up to the platform. “Wish me luck!”
He chuckled behind me. “You don’t need luck.”
My toes didn’t even meet the stone before the wind kicked into gear, whisking me up off the ground and into the skies.
Chapter 20
Time ceasedto exist while the sky held me in its embrace. I tumbled and swirled, feeling changes tug at my body in ways I didn’t have the words to describe. I felt myself transforming as the wind blew through my pores and into my blood, flooding my bones and even my fucking soul.
The force of the air tossed me around rapidly, until it finally calmed. My joys and pains and fears were whisked away before I could feel them, my emotions a gentle breeze in the hurricane that held me.
When the heavy winds surrounding me slowed to a gentle breeze, the peace in my soul was so strong that nothing could shake me.
I was…
Hmm.
I knew I existed, but I couldn’t recall who I was, exactly.
It took time for the memories and thoughts to begin working themselves out.
I remembered Dove, and Ivy.
I remembered the city we had destroyed.
And I remembered Storm.
