“Until I noticed that the animals in town started being murdered. We would find a new one every day in the neighborhood. The way they died grew worse every single day.” I can feel my stomach turning at the sights I had witnessed. I wipe the tears away from under my eyes.
“My dads were on hyper-alert and had Josh stay with us because his home life was really bad. His behavior started to change suddenly at school. He would poke people with needles in school; he would literally do things like that just to cause pain.”
I push my hair out of my face. “He played it off as a joke but then it grew worse. I told my dads I was uncomfortable with him. They wouldn’t let him stay over anymore.”
My mind escapes to that horrible, tormenting time. “He went crazy,” I whisper. “We would find eyeballs on our front porch, under my outside window. We didn’t know it was Josh at the time until I caught him murdering an animal in the backyard.”
“I told my dads and they called the police. But when they got to his house, he was gone.”
“He broke into our house in the middle of the night. My dads found him standing above me with a knife over his head ready to kill me. They tackled him and tied him up until the police took him away.”
“That’s when the girls in town were murdered and it was him, all of the girls looked just like me. He was fifteen at the time. I thought he was still in jail; I think him finding me here was just a crazy thing.”
I cover my face, the memories painful. “I need to call my dads.” I take out my phone but Walker takes it from me. “I will call them myself. Let’s get you to Lynn’s and we can figure out all of this shit. We need to tell everyone what is going on so our brothers can protect their women.”
CHAPTER 3
WALKER
I let Darren take Summer into Lynn’s house while I stay on the porch calling her dads.
I sit down into a rocking chair, dialing the number.
I’m still beyond fucking pissed off; this shit tonight was crazy. The scared looked on her face, fuck.
That hurt.
“Hey, baby girl.” I’d know that voice any day, Everett.
“Everett, it’s Walker.”
It’s complete silence over the phone for a few seconds before he speaks. “What the fuck happened?”
I close my eyes for a second hating to even think of this shit. “Josh.”
Both of them start cussing, but I continue the story of what happened tonight. “He got away, he fucking threatened her, threw a fucking machete at her.”
“Fuck, I’m across the fucking country fishing. Can you take her to our house so she can be safe tonight?”
“Definitely fucking not and put your woman in danger? Me and Darren will keep her safe, don't worry about that shit. You need to call and see when the fuck he got out. I’m sending my brothers to hunt his ass down.”
“This is hard, she’s our life.”
“I know man, I’ll protect her with my life.”
“We’re already on our way back home.” He hangs up and I put her phone in my pocket.
Through the glass I see Summer sitting in the middle of the couch with Darren talking to her.
Fuck, she is beautiful.
The second she walked out of her house and looked at me with those beautiful eyes, I was fucked.
I open the door and step inside. “I talked to your dads, they are on their way home.”
She smiles at me thankfully. I set her phone on the counter and turn it on silent. She is exhausted.
I sit down next to her, looking over her head at Darren. “Darlin, you’re dead on your feet.”
