“You’re overwhelmed. Totally understandable.”

“How do I live knowing the truth.”

“You just do it, Micah. Because I can’t live without you.”

“I’m no good for you, Destiny. You deserve better.” I pushed her hands away.

“So do you. Don’t you see how perfect we are for each other?”

I shoved her away. “That’s your inexperience talking. You’re so fucking nieve.” The air grew stale and suffocating.

I couldn’t breathe.

All I wanted to do was lie down and die.

I needed to get away before I broke her heart. She should be with a man who would put her first and cherish her. I wasn’t that man.

I was too fucked up and full of bitterness. Self-centered. And vengeful.

“Don’t push me away, Micah.”

“I’m doing you a favor. Don’t you see that?” I paced, scratching my head. I felt disgusting, like maggots were feeding on my flesh. “I can’t be here. I need to go. Go back to Montana to process.”

“Then we’ll go together.”

“Why?”

“Because I need you.”

“I’ll only destroy you.”

She grabbed my hands. “If you don’t want me to go with you, I’ll respect your decision.”

“Good.”

“But I hope you choose me. I hope you choose us, Micah. We’re like two broken pieces of a mirror that fits perfectly together. When we’re together we have peace. But when apart, we’re empty. So please try to remember how good we are together. Try to recall how you felt waking up in the morning with me next to you.”

“I don’t remember.” I shook my head, not wanting to listen to her.

“Yes, you do.”

“I’m not good enough for you,” I growled in her face like the animal I was.

“Oh, baby. It doesn’t matter what you say or think. I want to be with you. I get to make my own decisions. And you can make your own too.”

I stared into her eyes. My mind was chaotic and irrational, but she calmed the madness and my soul.

“What do you want, Micah?

“I want you. Fuck I need you.” I grabbed her and hugged her. “Leave with me. Let’s just run away.”

“I’d go anywhere with you, Micah Knight.”
