“Why doesn’t your pack have an omega?” She rested her head on my shoulder. Was she trying to torture me? Did she even realize what she was doing to me? To all of us?
She needed to know what she was dealing with before she let herself get too cozy with us. It was in our blood that we were naturally attracted to each other. It was true that not all alphas would find her appealing and vice versa, but if we’d come across her during the matching process, she would have been our number one choice. I just knew deep within me that she was ours.
“We can’t have an omega, Kara.” My voice cracked like I was twelve again. “We... we matched before, and she rejected us. OPS deemed us unfit.”
She didn’t move her head off my shoulder, but the feeling in the car shifted. Not many knew about the omega thanks to an iron-clad nondisclosure agreement everyone involved signed.
“But what if-”
“Please, don’t. This pack is holding on by a thread and we can’t get our hopes up only to have them ripped away again. Especially not with an omega like you.” I grabbed onto the door handle. “There’s nothing you can do. We are already under watch by the Pack Health Organization.”
“It’s not fair.” She sat back in her seat, making a strangled garbling noise.
“Please don’t cry.” I didn’t like when people cried, omega or not.
“It’s all I know how to do anymore.” At least I think that’s what she said because she had her hands over her face.
“I’m sure that’s not true. You’re just going through a rough patch.” I took off my seatbelt and climbed into the back despite my brain screaming at me that it was a bad idea.
I was working on instinct; there was an omega that needed consoling and I was born to take care of her. It would be fine just this once. I’d caused her pain, after all.
She’d taken her seatbelt off, so I pulled her into my lap. She didn’t fight me and wrapped her arms around me, burying her face in the crook of my neck.
“Our stories just don’t line up. You’re going to find a great pack that will love you and take care of your every need.” I rubbed her back and my purr thundered through my chest. “And one day we’ll find an omega that can handle the fame and take care of our needs.”
She cried harder, and I wished I could lay her down and let my entire body cradle her. Omegas were so precious, and seeing this one hurt so intensely was breaking me up inside.
“It hurts,” she choked out, trying to get even closer to me.
“Shhh.” I moved her off my lap. “Lie down.”
Her face was red and splotchy with tears. She didn’t argue, though, lying down as I knelt on the floorboard. She barely fit across the seat, so when I wiggled my way onto the narrow seat, I had to bend my knees and sandwich one of her legs between them.
She was so close that I could feel her breasts pressed against my chest and the tremble of her body. Or maybe it was the tremble of my purr.
She snuggled into me, her body relaxing as she let my purr comfort her. My chest felt like it was going to explode from happiness and longing. What was it about this omega that had me wanting to say fuck it all and run off with her?
We could do it. We had the money and connections to disappear. There were plenty of countries that didn’t have Omega Match and let alphas and omegas choose each other just like betas chose each other. Sure, that came with some problems at times, but it had to be better than having your every move watched.
The back door opened, and the smell of tacos wafted in. “What the hell, Cal?”
I lifted my head and shot him a glare. “Nothing is happening. Shut the door before someone gets a picture.”
None of the fans had seemed to notice the car he got out of, but I was sure they were watching, if not recording now. It was a good thing Kara was hidden from sight between me and the car seat.
“You can’t ride home like that.” Tate had only shut the door partially and was blocking the rest of the view with his body.
“I can. Just drive extra carefully.” I put my head back down and wiggled in closer to Kara, who wasn’t clinging to my shirt quite as hard now.
“Fine.” Tate slammed the door, which was surprising, and got in the driver’s seat. I couldn’t see what he was doing but could hear the plastic of the bags rustling.
“Can you keep it down? Kara needs some rest. She’s exhausted.” I tucked her hair behind her ear and her eyes were closed. I couldn’t tell if she was asleep, but she was relaxed.
“You’re ridiculous,” Tate muttered, starting the car and pulling out of the parking space.
He turned on some soft music and lowered the volume. So, he did care about her too.
As I continued to purr softly, I knew we had to do something so this omega could be ours. If that meant giving up our career or taking a long break, then it would be worth it.
