And we definitely required extra time with as many swings Kara needed to hit the ball. She’d only been to the driving range with me twice and had been more than willing to be my companion.

Kara pulled to a stop at the tee of the third hole and hopped out of the golf cart. She was dressed in the cutest white skirt and a pink and purple polo shirt. Her curly hair was pulled into a high ponytail and a purple visor kept the sun out of her eyes.

“How many hits do I get to get a birdie?” She selected a driver from the golf clubs I’d bought her.

“A birdie? Don’t you mean a par? You get four swings.” I grabbed my own driver and was amused as she struggled to get her ball to stay on the tee. “Need some help?”

“Nope. Okay, so if I want a birdie, I get… three swings.” She looked over at me. “Why are you smiling like that?”

“Just enjoying the view.” I blatantly looked her up and down. “You’re going to wear that for me later.”

“Am I?” She bent over again, purposely flashing me the short little shorts under the skirt.

Before she stood up, I dropped my club and moved in behind her, grabbing her hips. “Or we can go right here, right now.”

She laughed and stood up straight, rubbing her ass against me. “We shouldn’t disturb the turkeys.”

I stiffened—and not in the way I wanted to—and looked around. “Where?”

“It’s just too easy with you.” She turned around and patted my cheek. “I’ll protect you if they come after you.”

My relief was instant; she was just poking fun at me. “You sure know how to kick a man when he’s down.”

She snorted and lined up at the tee as I backed up out of the way. “They can sense your fear. Now, quiet, so I can concentrate.”

I adjusted myself and picked up my club, watching as she swung once, twice, then finally hit the ball on the third time, taking a chunk of grass with it. She watched the ball and then did a little happy dance that it stayed on the green.

“Good job, babe.” I gave her a quick kiss as we switched places. “Now, watch the pro.”

“You have the bigger advantage of having muscles and years of practice.” She put her driver away and crossed her arms. “But let’s see you beat the perfect hit I just had.”

I picked up the chunk of grass she hit and wiggled it in the air before putting it back where it had come from. “So perfect.”

My swing was a little off from the hard-on I was sporting and seeing Kara in my periphery looking like a snack. I hadn’t anticipated her being so flirty and distracting. I managed to get the ball on the green, barely.

“Not too bad, Carter. A career in the NBA is in your future.” She climbed back in the driver’s seat as I laughed and put my club away. “I really do appreciate you bringing me golfing. A few of my dads golfed, but I could never get up early enough to tag along.”

“My dads golf at least once a month. Well, at least they did before they got too busy.” I sighed and climbed into the passenger seat, holding on as she took off toward her ball.

“Maybe you should invite them to golf with you and make a rule that business talk isn’t allowed.” She stopped rather abruptly, and I was glad I was holding on. As soon as she got out, I slid over to the driver’s seat.

“We’ll see. I’m still not happy about how my dad added another concert without consulting us first.” I knew my dad meant well from a business standpoint, but he was an idiot when it came to what was best for us as human beings.

Kara hit the ball on the first try, not taking any grass in the process. I clapped, grinning as she did some kind of jig on her way back to the cart.

“I know your one dad can be frustrating at times, but I think you should just talk to him and tell him how you feel.” She got in the cart, and I headed for her ball again since mine was still farther from my first swing. “I don’t want you to regret not having a relationship with him because he’s an overbearing record exec.”

She was right, and I knew we just needed to talk it out during a time when he wasn’t being a VP. Sometimes I just needed a reminder that he was family, despite his role in my professional life.

“Thank you.” I pulled to a stop next to her ball and kissed her cheek.

She turned toward me and put her hand on my chest. I couldn’t help but purr, and she sighed, her blue eyes brighter than I’d ever seen them. “It just keeps getting better, doesn’t it?”

“I never knew it would be like this, Kara.” I brought her hand up to my lips and kissed each knuckle. “I didn’t just get a new best friend, but I got my old best friends back too.”

I entwined our fingers, and she squeezed my hand, her cheeks flushing. God, she was beautiful, and I wanted to kiss her so badly, but her hat was in the way, so I did the next best thing and kissed my mark on her neck.

She groaned. “We’re supposed to be golfing, not getting frisky.”
