Cade snickered. “Serves you right.”

I watched the two volley back and forth and smiled. It was obvious they were old friends, and I was very curious as to what Cade had sent Rayne even if it was none of my business.

Beau looked at me as if he could tell what I was thinking. “He told her,Delaney says you’re sweet. I bet she doesn’t know how much of a good girl you really are.”

My eyes widened as I held up my hand and chuckled. “It’s none of my business. But I’m happy for the two of you.”

Beau pushed his chair back. “I’m going to go hit the head before I accidentally see what my sister messages back.”

Cade’s phone buzzed again.

Beau jumped up. “I’ll be back,” he muttered and headed toward the restrooms.

Cade leaned back in his chair and grinned. “I only wrote it because he was being nosy.”

I put my hand over my mouth to quiet the burst of laughter that came out of me. “I shouldn’t laugh, but that’s too funny. You two are more like brothers than best friends.”

He shrugged. “We’ve known each other forever. And I hope to make him my brother-in-law someday. Maybe sooner rather than later.”

My expression softened. “Congratulations.”

Rayne and Cade hadn’t been dating long, but since they’d known each other for years, I didn’t think they were moving too fast.

He leaned forward and lowered his voice. “Just don’t tell anyone. I don’t have a ring or anything yet.”

I mimicked his posture. “Your secret is safe with me,” I whispered.

Someone cleared their throat, and it sounded masculine. I figured Beau had come back and overheard what his friend had to say, but when I looked up, it wasn’t Rayne’s brother.

“Preston.” I blinked up at him in surprise. “What are you doing here? How did you find me?”

“Your sister told me where you were.”

“Natalie?”Since when did she help Preston out?

“Yes, but she failed to mention who you were with.”

I frowned, confused—until I watched Preston look at Cade.

Shit. He thought I was on a date with Cade.

“Oh, no. You don’t—”

Preston cut me off with a hand to the back of my neck. “If you don’t mind, I need to speak tomy wife,” he said to Cade.

Cade’s eyebrows flew up.

“Ex-wife,” I corrected. “And I think you said everything you needed to say the other night.”

It wasn’t entirely true. Preston and I still needed to discuss some things, but he didn’t need to come and interrupt my dinner to do it now.

Fisting my hair, he gently tilted my head back. “Wife, Laney.”

He released my locks, and when I looked back down, he set a piece of paper in front of me.

Gasping, I snatched up the paper to make sure my eyes weren’t playing tricks on me.
