“What?” he snapped as he looked toward me. He must not have noticed before, but he noticed then. The large hickey on my neck was beaming proudly as he moved my hair to inspect. “What is this?!”
“Uh… it’s… um… a hickey?” I said innocently. Lucca snickered, and I threw out a glare at him.
“From your mate?” Dad raised an eyebrow, still hovering close to me. I nodded excitedly. “Who is he? The only known King that hasn’t found a queen,…” He trailed off before snapping his head back to me. “Osirus? The Fae King?” he roared. There goes happy Dad.I nodded yes again, and he slumped his shoulders.
“I only just got you back and you will already be going back to the surface.” This wasn’t the response I was thinking I was going to get, but at least he won’t keep me away from Osirus. I would have been heartbroken if my father decided I couldn’t be with him and with our bond this strong, I don’t think I could handle the heartache. I couldn’t lose both when I just got everyone back into my life.
Dad sat us both down and talked about why I never noticed my powers before, and it was just because I never noticed them; why would I when I spent most of my time on land? I also never tried to breathe underwater, and I never sang to anyone to lure them to me, which was another history lesson for another time. I wanted to know if I get scales too, but Dad said that I was still only half-siren, possibly more than three-quarters because of his strong bloodline. When he switched to a full human form, he mentioned he had darkened hair like I do, which I’m guessing is another trait I got from him.
The conversation flowed flawlessly as we talked about my history, how I was alone for so long, finding out about the supernatural, and finally arriving in Bergarian. My father had his arm around me the entire time we spoke and beamed with pride at how I took my first breath of water just hours ago.
“That’s my daughter! You did that better than most guppies! It’s the royal blood in you!” I laughed while Lucca shook his head.
“Guess she’s the favorite child now, huh?”
“Most definitely. She’s my little girl! And I need to meet Osirus. I dealt with his parents before but never met the fairy.”
“He’s a fae!” I whined.
“No matter,” he growled. “Nothing is too good for my baby girl.” I gasped.
“Yay! I’m a daddy’s girl!” I laughed and clapped ridiculously. The thought of me calling Osirus ‘Daddy’ too disturbed me.I’ll just call my father Dad. Goddesses have mercy.
“Father, we need to get her back. King Osirus will expect her at the cottage after the war.”
“Nonsense, my Princess will not stay there. She will stay here, and we will all personally take her back to Osirus tomorrow, along with an army. We aren’t that far from the Fae Kingdom. We can leave at dawn. I can then size him up and see if he is good enough for Melina, Moon Goddess or not. He will be good to her.”
I rolled my eyes, but I secretly loved it.
Chapter Thirty-Six
Osirus
Itwasnearingmidnight, and she still hadn’t fallen asleep. I growled out in frustration as I paced the room. The moon was high tonight, a mere crescent, but the Light pixies kept the entire kingdom lit with their excitement. They would receive seats in the Court and were deemed equals throughout the kingdom.
Small fires were finally put out and now only bits of ash remained as the smoke entails the outskirts of the kingdom’s territory. The shifters had all taken shelter in the many dormitories we hold within the palace walls. They were all considered heroes and would forever be remembered as I planned to build a monument with all the names who helped in the good fight.
Not many lives were lost as we fought. I commanded them to wound many as they could without terminal injury. It wasn’t their fault they were fighting with the wrong leadership commanding them. They didn’t know, and they were still my subjects. We were to rebuild the kingdom, not have the people mourning losses. This would be a time of celebration, and the shifters who came to help understood my plea to just fight them off and defend, not destroy.
Clenching my fist, I lay on the sofa to try again. Laying on the bed would be more comfortable, but it hurt my soul not having her there. Her smell still lingered on the pillow, and it only made me miss her more.
I must reach her. If I don’t, I will spread my wings for the first time in centuries and fly to her. I needed to know she was all right. Keeping a promise I made to her, for her to see my wings emerge from my back for the first time in so long would be broken, but it would be just as I went to search for her.
Taking a large breath, I willed myself to concentrate, to feel her aura with me, and that was when I felt it. She was slowly falling into a deeper sleep. Melina was safe. She was comfortable. I could feel her physical body as it sunk deeper into the folds of the sheets. Calmness encompassed me as I began to will us into our own dreamland, one that I would have right here in our own room.
The bed dipped with her body lying inside our white linens. I caressed her arm with one of my fingers as I willed her to wake up in our dream. A small smile was gracing her lips. I prayed she was thinking of me. My darling’s eyes fluttered open as her long lashes graced her cheeks. The large pearly smile gazed at me with excitement.
“Osirus!” she squealed as she held onto my neck. “You are all right! Is the war over? Can I come home to you?” Her excitement thrilled me she wanted to be back with me. After our last dream together, I was worried she would still be upset.
“Yes, darling, it’s over. We’ve won,” I whispered in the shell of her ear.
“Is everyone all right?” her voice said, laced with concern.
“Of course, what kind of king would I be if I let my own subjects die for what we were all fighting for in the first place?” I smirked at her as I took in her attire.
Melina had a blush pink silk camisole on with rather revealing shorts. I don’t remember ever buying anything like this. “Darling, what are you wearing?” My voice was laced with apprehension, with a hint of anger.
“Oh, this?” She blushed. “It’s a long story, but I found my real father today!” My mouth hung wide. I’ve missed much, apparently.
