“That was one rule I was willing to break for punishment.” I put both of my hands on his face and gave him a searing kiss. A few of my brothers groaned as Osirus snaked his arms around my waist. Horus gave a little bite to my tush as I squealed.

“Right, right.” I pulled away, but Osirus didn’t let go of my hand. “I think Horus wants to eat the witch down there.” I pointed to the entrance. My brothers nodded as Osirus told them how to bring her up.

She was frozen, unable to move, but she could talk. Boy, could she talk. There were phrases and words I had never heard of before. My father came behind me to cover my ears as they brought Prinna in front of Horus. Horus’s eyes gleamed with excitement as Prinna tried to back away.

“He gets stronger the more magical entities he eats,” Osirus explained. “You helping him consume a coven witch has only put him in further debt with us, even though I tell him he can leave.” Horus eyed me and gave his little dragon bow he does while I clung to Osirus. “I thought the witches would get to him. That’s why I left him out of the fight, but I guess you knew better, darling.”

“Yup, I did.”

No, I didn’t. I had no clue what I was doing. Osirus pitched my butt as I rubbed the pain away.

Osirus grabbed me and pulled me to his chest while I heard the screams quiet and the cracking of bones invade my ears. The sound alone was going to give me nightmares, let alone all the burned bodies.

Chapter Seventy

Melina

Aftertheadrenalineslowlyleft my body, I understood everything I saw. It was so much blood and carnage. The crisp figures lying in the courtyard made my stomach churn. I had not grown up with so much violence, and this being my first battlefield, was shocking, and I knew I was not made for this kind of life. Now that Osirus was back with my family and me by my side, I could finally relax.

Until the dang coronation.

Tulip was safe, we were safe, and it was all said and done. Letting out an enormous sigh, Osirus put his hand on the small of my back. My father started directing orders for my brothers to check for anyone left alive around the area and take care of it before anyone healed.

“Let’s get you home, darling,” Osirus spoke as he waved for Horus to come around.

Horus stood triumphant as he licked his lips after obtaining a coven witch in his belly. A few glides later, he stood before us and leaned his neck down. I mounted first with Osirus’s help, and he sat behind me, holding my waist. Horus walked through the barrier that was now crumbling, and there stood behind us was a large stone structure of what was the Blood Coven. The glamour spell had broken. It was attached to a great stone wall that had been there for centuries.

“This building connected to the wall served as border control between the two nations during the Shifter War. The vampires’ nation is on the other side; it’s best to steer clear of them now.”

I hummed in acknowledgment, not wanting to have a history lesson at the moment. I still had to store the memories of what happened just this afternoon, and that was going to take a bit to get over.

Horus took to the sky with long gentle strokes of his wings. The scales shone brighter as he ascended the clouds. “You know, you are still not without punishment.” My body stiffened a bit at his words. “I told you to behave, and you deliberately put yourself in danger.”

“I think you liked when I disobeyed you. I think you wanted to spank me,” I chided. His grip around my waist grew tighter as his lips brushed my ear.

“I would love nothing more than to spank you, but what you did deserves more than that.” His voice was husky and low as he bit my ear a little too hard. I immediately clamped my legs around Horus’s neck, and he started growling lowly. Osirus let out a loud laugh as he kissed the temple of my head.

Once we arrived close to the palace, we saw Cricket running around with Elaine. She looked happy, healthy even. Her smile was wide, and her skin had lost the terrible gray color. Her wings were out as she showed Cricket how to use them to make him run faster since his wings were not large enough to fly.

“That’s it!” She laughed heartedly as he began flapping feverishly. “Keep going!” Cricket saw us in the sky as Horus started his descent into the front courtyard. The flowers and leaves blew, causing petals to fly about as he landed. Horus kept his talons in as he landed on the soft grass, being sure not to destroy the lawn.

“Melina!” Cricket screamed as he hugged my legs. “You found my mama!” I hugged him tightly as Everett and Braxton approached.

“Eye, that she did,” Everett bragged. “And to think all she did was save the boy from getting his hand cut off by the baker.” Elaine gasped as she grabbed hold of Cricket again.

“What happened?” she cried.

“It was nothing,” I sighed as I pet Cricket’s head. “The orphanage didn’t have enough money for food, but we made sure it was corrected. Cricket was just trying to feed the younger children.” Elaine kissed Cricket’s cheeks, calling him his brave boy while he tried to push her away.

“Not around my friends, Mama!” Elaine’s eyes investigated the distance as if she was looking for someone.

“It was Daphne, wasn’t it? She taxed them heavily, didn’t she?” Osirus grabbed me by the waist with one hand and rubbed my arm with the other. I nodded my head solemnly as she clutched one hand to her chest.

“I’m sorry,” I nodded in confirmation.

“Is she…?” Osirus put me behind him as he stepped forward.

“She is no longer with us.” He put his arm over his heart and bowed slightly. Elaine gripped him tightly in a hug while Osirus stiffened. Elaine let out a few tears clutching Osirus, and nodded into his chest.
