ChapterSix

Naomi

“Hurry up, booski!” Corbin shouts from the door.

She’s here to pick me up for our four days in Pigeon Forge at a hotel and spa. Massages, facials, manicures and pedicures, something with seaweed that’s supposed to detoxify our bodies, sweating away in the sauna… we have a full list of appointments and I can’t wait. We booked an extra day so we could spread out our appointments and do some shopping, too.

I’ve never been one to spend money on things that I can do to myself, but once in a while, it’s fun to be pampered. After putting my body through what I put it through, I think I deserve it. Or maybe I don’t. Either way, I’m going to enjoy the crap out of the next four days.

Our DoorDash accounts will be zinging with payments because we might be going to a spa, but we’re not planning to drink fruit-infused water and eat tofu the entire time. I don’t even know what foods they serve, actually, but I know that it’s not Doritos and burgers.

When you live in a small town, you don’t have the luxury of ordering food delivery from pretty much anywhere. Well, aside from pizza. Might make us boring, but being able to order whatever food we’re hungry for and not having to get out of our pajamas is the stuff my dreams are made of.

Okay, yeah, we’re boring, but we’re going to be relaxed and hydrated and pampered doing it.

“I’m coming! Geesh! It’s not like we’re on a timeline!” I holler from my bathroom where I’m zipping up my cosmetic bag.

“Yes, we are,” she says now next to me.

I scream and jump, holding my hand to my heart.

“Holy shit, you scared me.”

“I move like a tiger. All stealthy and quiet. It’s how I sneak up on my brothers in the office.”

Laughing, I toss my bag in the suitcase and zip it up.

“I’m ready, tiger.”

“Yay! Let’s get this show on the road.”

“I can’t tell if you’re excited or not,” I tease.

She rolls her eyes and grabs the handle of my suitcase, tugging it along behind her.

“Do you blame me? I haven’t had a vacation in a long time and to finally be getting away for a few days has me giddy. Don’t forget to lock up,” she reminds me.

“Thanks for the reminder, Mom.”

“You know, I’d take offense to that but Mom’s awesome and I consider it a compliment.”

She’s not wrong. Leah is an amazing person and mother. She divorced her husband after he was cheating as well, and is one of only a few people who know my entire story. She’s been like a mother to me since the day I met her.

It takes us no time to toss my suitcase in the trunk of her SUV and get on the road.

“Here’s a coffee,” she says, pointing to what I know will be one of the best cups of coffee available. There’s this little shack right off Main Street in town that’s only drive-thru and the straight up coffee is the best ever.

“Bless you,” I murmur, taking a large swig. Perfectly creamed with just a touch of sweetener. “I don’t know what voodoo they have going on there but dang, they make a good cup of coffee.”

“That they do.”

Once we’re on the highway that leads us to the interstate, we crank up the music and jam to some 90’s country tunes that we know every single word of. There’s nothing quite like 90’s music in general but the country songs just hit different.

About an hour into our trip of singing and small talk, I reach over and turn the radio down.

“I need to say something that’s been on my mind for a while.”

“Go for it,” she says, biting a big chunk out of a Twizzlers.
