“On the practical side, I cannot attend to her unless we cancel the remaining tour. Having done it once when my father fell ill, it could put future tours in jeopardy, and I will take a hard hit financially. On an emotional level, I’m unsure if I would be able to take on that responsibly without causing myself harm because of our caustic relationship. And I amcertainAutumn would wither under the weight of her constant criticism.”
He sighed heavily. “There are many things that remain unresolved between my mother and me. If I am being honest…I would like meaningful closure with the woman.”
“That’s understandable, Tono. You deserve that opportunity.”
“Regrettably, because of the nature of her tumor, the window for that opportunity is closing. The doctor warned me that as it grows, she will experience changes in her mood, personality, and way of thinking.”
“Oh, Tono! I’m sorry this is happening to you—and to her.”
“As am I,” he answered gravely.
“Is there anything I can do for you?” Brie pleaded, needing a way to help him.
“Concentrate on your documentary. It will bring me happiness to know that you are pouring your time and heart into something you are passionate about.”
Brie let out a small sob. “My heart is breaking for you.”
“It’s important that you devote your energy to the things you can control. I do not need or want you toexpend it on concern for me. This journey, whether I want it or not, is one I must accept.”
Brie closed her eyes, desperate to bring peace to his soul. “I promise to send you good thoughts every time I think of you.”
“I will receive them with gratitude, toriko.”
“When I film the interview with Master Nosh next week, I will be wearing the orchid in my hair so you can be there with me in spirit.”
She heard the affection in his voice when he said, “Please give Master Nosh my best when you see him.”
“I will.”
Before hanging up, Tono told her, “In uncertain times, knowing those you care about are well brings an abundance of peace.”
Brie sat there afterward, her heart aching for Tono. Keeping her promise to him, she immediately closed her eyes.
I’m sending you my love and good thoughts, Tono.
Master Nosh
Brie was in her upstairs office, busy writing her finalized plan for the interview with Master Nosh the following day, when her text notification went off on her phone. She glanced over at her children playing on the floor beside her desk as she picked it up. The moment she read the text, Brie let out a squeal of joy:
Radost moya, have you missed your Russian?
Rather than text him back, she immediately dialed his number. As soon as he picked up, she blurted, “I’ve missed you more than you know! I’ve been worried after not hearing from you for so long.”
He chuckled. “Siberia is a big place. Bigger than your puny country.”
She laughed. “Well, you know, size doesn’t matter…”
“Ha!”
Just hearing his voice caused Brie to grip the phone tightly, her cheeks hurting from smiling so hard.
His voice warm, Rytsar told her, “I see from your last text that you finally opened my gift from the ranch.”
“I did, and I’m deeply touched by your thoughtfulness. I have Wildflower’s photo sitting on my nightstand. Whenever I look at that beautiful horse, I feel like I’m getting a giant hug from you.”
“That pleases me,” he stated in satisfaction. “You will be happy to know I am finalizing the transfer of the creature right now.”
Her jaw dropped. “You finally caught Lilly?”
