She and Wesley loved each other. She knew he wanted children. It’d been one of those conversations about Noelle that had come up a few times. She didn’t think she was ready for this and maybe he wasn’t either, but if she was pregnant they were going to have to figure it out.
She got through her day as best as she could and then drove to his house, getting there before him. She put her purse on the counter and opened the fridge to look for something to make for dinner.
Nothing sounded good with the nerves slamming through her body.
She heard the garage door open and decided this was one of those times she couldn’t wait around to tell him. There was no easy way to say this and she was just going to when he was settled.
“Hey,” he said, coming in the side door. “You beat me here. Sorry. I was running late.”
“Not a problem,” she said. “I was trying to figure out dinner.”
“I like that,” he said. “That you come home and are ready to put dinner on the table for me.” He playfully slapped her ass while he was grinning.
“Maybe someday you can have dinner on the table for me when I get home.”
“Anytime you want, you just tell me. I’ve cooked for you before and have no problem sharing that duty.”
She smiled at him, glad to hear that and hoped he felt the same way soon, regardless of the outcome.
There was a small part of her that was worried he’d think she did this on purpose, but she didn’t. They’d always worn condoms. They’d never not been protected.
She grabbed shrimp out of the freezer and put the bag in some water to thaw it fast. He had a jar of some cream sauce she’d seen and she’d throw the shrimp in that and put it over spaghetti. Easy and fast enough in her eyes. Nothing she had to focus on.
When he came back out in shorts and T-shirt he pulled her into his arms for another hug, but she wiggled out. “Can we talk?”
“Always,” he said. “But this sounds serious. What’s wrong? Something with someone in your family?”
The fact he thought and asked that right away just warmed her heart. “No. Everyone is fine. Everyone but me, I think,” she said, letting out a nervous laugh.
“What’s wrong with you?”
“I’m late,” she blurted out.
“Late for what?”
“My period.”
“Oh. Okay. How late?”
“You’re not upset?”
“No. I’m old enough to not panic if the woman I love might be pregnant. Did you think I’d be upset? I’m not. I might even be thrilled, but the question is, how would you feel?”
“Thank you for that,” she said, letting out a breath. “I’m not sure what I feel. Deep down I knew you’d be okay with this, but I wasn’t sure. You’ve got a lot more than me and I didn’t want anyone to think I was trying to trap you or anything.”
“I wouldn’t think that and what I think is all you should worry about. How late?” he asked again.
“Three weeks. I bought a home test. I haven’t taken it. I was scared to. I was going to do it this morning and there was part of me that said maybe you’d want to be part of it.”
“I totally want to be part of it,” he said, laughing. “Let’s go pee on a stick.”
She laughed with him. “I have to do it, not you.”
“Go do it then,” he said.
She took a deep breath and grabbed the test out of her purse, then went to the half bath down the hall. When she was done she came out. “I left it in the bathroom. I set a timer on my phone to go off when it’d be ready. We can start dinner.”
“Oh hell no,” he said. “I can’t cook dinner if I’m thinking of that.”
