“Yeah, I’m fine. Just had a weird conversation with her. Do you know anything about Sam Langfield?” I place my coffee and cupcake on the reception desk and turn back to Mac.
“Other than that, she’s a Miller, divorced with a young girl, and is hot as fuck… not much.”
I grip the edge of the desk, my knuckles going white. Good thing I already placed the coffee on the table or I might have coffee all over me right now. I don’t know why, but hearing Mac say Sam is hot as fuck pisses me off.
“Whoa. Alright.” Mac puts his hands up, palms out, and takes a step away from me. “I wasn’t aware you called dibs.”
“I didn’t!” I bark out.
“Ha,” Mac barks out a laugh. “If you say so, but that look on your face tells me something different.”
I scowl at him. “I’m here now. You can go.”
Mac grabs his bomber jacket from the coat rack and puts it on, shaking his head laughing. “Okay, Okay I got it. See ya later.” He opens the door and I see him making his way over to the diner.
I grab the bag and take out the cupcake, taking a huge bite as I watch Mac enter the diner. He usually heads over there for a bite to eat after a long night shift, but if he says anything to her… I will kill him.
I groan as the flavour of the cupcake explodes in my mouth. Wow, this is unbelievable. I’ve never tasted a carrot cake cupcake this good before. Sam has got some talent, that’s for sure.
My mind again goes to Sam and what my gramma said. I want to get to know more about her, but that’s not something you just come out and ask. Why is this bothering me so much? It’s not like I plan on dating her. Yes, she’s pretty, but I don’t date women from town, no matter how pretty they are or how my body reacts when we touch.
Chapter Eight
Josh
Thepastfewdaysthe diner has been like a magnet, pulling me in. I stop by for my coffee every morning for work, and seeing Sam is just a bonus. Or, that’s what I tell myself. I find I’ve been lying to myself a lot about her.
Every time I stop in the diner, my eyes zero in on her, no matter what she is doing.
I stop dead in my tracks when I spot her. She’s bent over searching for something in a bottom cabinet, and I can’t help but stare at her ass through the windows of the dessert display. Her ass looks amazing in what seems to be some sort of yoga style black pants. They are like a second skin, pulled so tight across her perfectly round ass.
A thick lump forms at the base of my throat, making it hard to swallow. What the hell is this woman doing to me? I’ve never had this type of reaction to a woman from town.
I tear my gaze away from Sam and find a booth in the far corner of the store near the kitchen entrance and sit facing the doorway. I always pick a seat facing the door, thanks to my police training.
This spot is perfect. I have a full view of the entire diner. It’s not because I can see Sam wherever she is, although that is a bonus. It’s so that I can keep watch. Not that much happens in the diner, that would call for police presence, but you never know.
I see Sam walking towards my table and grin at her. Her hair is up in a high ponytail and she has a slight gloss on her plump lips. She’s wearing little to no makeup, and that appeals to me. Most of the women I hook up with usually have way too much makeup on. This is a nice refreshing change, and I’ll admit it looks good on her.
“Morning Josh,” Sam says as she reaches my table. “What can I get you today?”
I look up at her. “I’ll have a coffee, black, and what muffins do you have today?” Sam likes to switch it up and every couple of days bakes a different muffin for the diner.
“We have Cranberry, Chocolate Chunk and Cinnamon Raisin.” She smiles and I swear it brightens up the room.
“I’ll try a cranberry muffin today. Thanks.”
“Do you want it as is or warmed?”
I think it over for a minute. “Warm it up.” I grin up at her.
“Okay. Be right back.” She nods her head and walks away. I watch her leave. The soft sway of her hips has me in a trance or some shit because I hear Bea say something to me as she walks past and into the kitchen, but I have no clue what she said.
Bea walks back out. I hear her snicker. “I can’t say I blame you, Josh. She’s a stunner, that one there.” She tilts her head towards Sam.
“What?” I act as if I have no idea what she’s talking about.
She throws her head back and laughs loud and boisterous, then leans in so no one else can hear. “I totally caught you checking out Sam’s butt.”
