I don’t expect anyone to be around at this late hour. So, it’s a surprise when I see someone lying on the couch.
Iris is tucked under a blanket but a socked foot peeks out from under the folds. Strands of her golden hair spread over the cushion and tumble past the couch.
The thick carpet under my boots cushions my footfalls as I approach her. Completely unaware of my presence, she continues to snooze softly.
Relief spreads through me as I kneel before her and gently caress her hair.
She’s here, my mind whispers.And she’s mine.
I never thought I could feel this possessive of anyone other than Julian. For the longest time, he took up all the space in my heart, but Iris’s presence seems to have expanded my ability to love and protect. They’re both precious to me and losing either one of them would shatter my heart.
Unable to hold back, I stroke her cheek.
The pale skin immediately responds to my touch, turning a shade of pink. Her thick, dark lashes flutter, and suddenly, her emerald-green eyes are looking up at me.
“Hey,” I say softly.
“Caleb!” she blurts, sitting up at once. She bats at the long strands tumbling over her face and stares at me. “What time is it?”
“It’s past two already.”
A groan escapes her. “I can’t believe I fell asleep.”
“It’s quite late,” I say, sinking onto the couch. “Why’re you sleeping here?”
“I was waiting for you and your brothers to come home.” A worried look comes over her. “You guys barely slept last night and ran off to work without finishing breakfast. Did you at least eat lunch?”
I scratch the back of my head and grin guiltily. “There was no time to eat.”
A frown twists her lips. “That’s not a good excuse. You’ve got to eat and sleep properly or you’ll end up being sick.”
“I’ll be fine.”
She shakes her head and gets to her feet. “Come on. We’re going into the kitchen.”
“Do we have to?” I ask, loosening my tie. “If I go to bed now, I can catch an extra hour of sleep.”
Her eyes flash with anger. “An extra hour of sleep? You’re not going to work tomorrow before nine.”
“What? You don’t understand—” She raises her hand, stopping me mid-sentence.
“I know you’ve got a lot of shit to handle,” she says in a grim tone. “But you’ve got to take care of yourself first. You can’t risk burning out when people are depending on you. Your men need you to stay strong and in command. Your pack needs you, Caleb.”
All my excuses die on my lips.
Iris isn’t wrong. I’d already spent four sleepless nights since the attack. I don’t even remember eating during the days Iris was away at the clinic.
Before I can say anything, she grabs my hands and pulls.
“Come on,” she says, struggling to get me off the couch.
A chuckle escapes me. Our little omega is damn cute when she’s trying to take care of us.
I jerk my arms, pulling her against me.
A gasp escapes her as she loses her balance and stumbles into my chest. Her perfume wafts into my nostrils, making me inhale deeply. My eyes close in bliss as her sweet fragrance soaks into my senses.
“Shh,” I whisper as she struggles to get back to her feet. Bringing my arms around her, I pull her closer to me.
