“Come on,” Caleb says, racing toward the car.

“We’re going home,” I tell Iris and hurry after my brother.

Caleb

Iris’s sobs ring in my ear as I drive through the rough, uneven terrain surrounding Fort Callahan. My foot is eager to step on the gas harder but the car is already jerking as the tires go over potholes.

I turn back to glance at Raiden and Iris. Half of her body is in his lap while the other is sprawled on the backseat. Her hands clutch at her lower belly while she whimpers with pain.

Raiden whispers soothing words to her, telling her we’ll be home soon. He’s gentle with her as he dabs at her sweaty forehead. Her skin and lips have gone horribly pale and she’s barely able to open her eyes.

The scene reminds me of the time she collapsed in the kitchen. She’d been in so much pain that she nearly passed out from it.

I’d vowed to protect her that day but failed miserably.

It’s my failure as a leader and her mate that’s brought Iris to the brink of death a second time. Only the goddess knows what Callahan did to her.

When I walked inside that room, my gaze had zeroed in on the bastard. He was bent over her and trying to force himself on her. He must’ve hurt her terribly for her to be in so much pain.

Blood coats my knuckles. I’d fought the asshole and made sure he tasted my full wrath. The beast within me growls, urging me to go back to the manor and finish the man who’d dared to hurt my mate.

Iris needs me, I chant in my head. It’s the only way I can stay in control and not give in to my animalistic urges.

My fingers tighten on the steering wheel as I navigate through the wild, overgrown road. A part of me wants to take Iris home but it wouldn’t help her.

Iris needs a doctor who’s aware of her condition. I’ve never heard of an omega who’d been suppressed all her life. We all thought she was a beta until the moment we caught her scent.

Relief spreads through me when we finally cross the rough terrain and get onto a highway that connects us to downtown Winslow. My foot steps on the gas, letting the car move at top speed.

“Why didn’t you take the other interstate highway?” Raiden asks from the back. “It’d have taken us home sooner.”

“We’re not going home.”

“What?”

“Iris needs a doctor,” I explain. “We have no idea what Callahan did to her. He could’ve even...” I swallow a choke, unable to say the word ‘rape’.

“He drugged her,” Raiden says.

“What?” I glance backward at my younger brother. “How do you know?”

He takes a small syringe out of his pocket. The needle attached to the tip is broken.

“I found this on the bed beside Iris,” he says.

“Good thing you picked it up,” I say, turning my gaze back on the road. “The doc will know whether it’s the drugs or something else.”

Rummaging inside my jacket pocket, I bring out my phone.

“Who’re you calling?” Raiden asks.

“Dr. Lawson,” I tell him. “She’s the only doctor who’s aware of Iris’s condition. She knew about her being an omega much earlier than us.”

“Are you sure she’s trustworthy?”

“Iris begged her not to tell me and the lady kept her word,” I say, thinking about the stubborn alpha woman who’d not tell me what was wrong with Iris no matter how much I pressured her. “She cares for Iris’s wellbeing. I’m sure of that much.”
