“All right, then. Call her.”

Making sure the road ahead of me is clear, I make a call to Dr. Lawson.

“Hello?” A curt female voice answers immediately.

“Dr. Lawson?”

“Yeah. Do I need to come right away?”

She probably thinks I’m calling from the hospital since she attends the emergency ward. Taking a deep breath, I gather my thoughts together.

“This is Caleb Solveig,” I say in a level voice. “Do you remember me?”

A momentary silence follows. “You’re Iris Collins’s guardian,” she says in a low, suspicious tone. “What do you want this late at night?”

“It’s Iris,” I say, struggling to keep my tone even. “She was attacked and we think she was drugged. Do you remember how she was when I brought her to you a couple of weeks ago? She’s suffering from the same kind of stomach cramps as last time. You’re the only one who’s aware of her past medical history and I need you to take a look at her.”

“I told her not to take anything that can mess with her hormones,” Dr. Lawson says in a grim tone.

“She was drugged against her will,” I say in a desperate voice.

There’s silence on the line.

“Bring her over to my clinic,” she says after a while.

“Isn’t the hospital better equipped?”

“I’m sure you’re aware of the emergency situation at St. Nikolas right now. The terrorist attack on your estate has left several men injured. All available doctors and medics have been asked to stay on standby. You should bring her here so that I can attend to her immediately.”

“Thank you, doctor.”

“Thank me after I’ve treated her,” she says in a grim tone. “I’m texting you the address.”

The call switches off.

My phone vibrates with an incoming text a few seconds later. My body relaxes slightly as I read the address. Dr. Lawson’s clinic isn’t too far from downtown Winslow.

“What did she say?” Raiden asks in an urgent tone.

“St. Nik will soon be swarming with injured soldiers from our base,” I say as the car moves into sparse traffic. “She gave me the address to her clinic as it’ll be faster to attend to Iris there.”

“That’s good,” he says in a grim tone. “I don’t think she can hold on much longer.”

Thankfully, traffic is mostly nonexistent at this hour of the night, allowing me to drive like a maniac. Iris’s moans are barely audible now. She’s completely slumped against Raiden’s chest and no longer moving.

The tires screech as I bring the car to a stop beside the building that houses Dr. Lawson’s clinic. Climbing out of the car, I open the back passenger door.

“Give her to me,” I say, leaning inside.

A torn expression flashes across my brother’s face. I know his protective instincts are as fired up as mine are.

“I’ll be gentle,” I assure him.

He gives a nod and helps Iris into my arms. Securing her against me, I straighten up and move inside the building.

The security guards in the foyer glance up at my entrance.

One of them rushes up to me and takes a quick look at Iris. “Mr. Solveig?” he asks.
