His words are enough to tell me that he’s come prepared to cause some kind of trouble. It’s a good thing we’ve taken every measure possible to curb any kind of sudden attack.

He halts, making me stop in my steps.

“Here, you go,” he says, grabbing a glass of red wine from a valet’s tray and thrusting it in my hand.

“I don’t want it,” I retort, placing the glass back on the tray.

“Take it,” Callahan hisses, his dominance crashing into me. Thankfully, the pill I took earlier keeps me from becoming a slave to his command. Swallowing hard, I force myself to keep up the pretense of being compelled by him.

“Come this way,” he says, leading me to a lone corner of the vast room.

My gaze roves through the crowd, trying to spot Julian. He’s nowhere to be seen but I’m sure he’s watching Callahan’s every move through the cameras he’s installed in this room.

Callahan opens a small chit of paper and pours a white powder into my wine glass.

“Drink up,” he says, his black eyes shining with malice.

“What did you add to my drink?”

“No more questions,” he says, barely concealing his evil smirk. “Just drink.”

Keeping my lips pressed to the rim, I pretend to take a sip.

Callahan’s eyes watch me closely for my reaction.

I feign becoming dizzy. Placing my hands to my temple, I pretend to stagger on my high heels.

Callahan is there to catch me. His arm snakes around my waist and pulls me against him. “Are you okay, baby?” he croons. “Take another sip of your wine. I’m sure you’ll feel better.” His fingers wrap around my wrist as he forces the glass to my lips.

I pretend to take another sip and swallow dryly.

Staggering against him, I let my head loll onto his chest.

“Let me help you,” he says, dragging me toward a hallway that leads away from the entrance hall.

I feign being drugged and stay limp in his hold.

This part of the mansion is deserted, giving him the opportunity to drag me away easily. He soon approaches a deserted staircase that leads to the upper quarters of the mansion.

He tries to make me climb the stairs but I pretend to have lost all my ability to stay on my feet.

“You’re barely able to keep your eyes open,” he says in a satisfied tone. “I like it when you’re being a good girl, Rose. You make me want to devour you whole.” His nose skims along my neck. “I don’t smell your fragrance. Maybe it’s a good thing you used a de-scenter to mask your perfume. I don’t want any strange man catching a whiff of your irresistible scent.”

With that, he hauls me up in his arms.

I silently pray for Julian to stay calm. He’s most definitely watching Callahan taking me upstairs.

I stay limp in Callahan’s arms and watch him carry me inside a bathroom.

“Why did you bring me here?” I ask, feigning a slurred voice as he sets me on the floor.

“I want to be alone with you,” he says, standing before me. Reaching out, he fumbles with the zipper of my jacket. He pulls it down, revealing my ample cleavage spills from the tight constraints of my dress.

His eyelids flutter close as he leans in, laying his cold, filthy lips on my bare skin. He’s so distracted by lust, he doesn’t notice the rage and hatred spreading on my face as he draws closer.

Using the opportunity, I let the heel of my hand connect with his chin. A bone-crunching crack echoes around the bathroom followed by a loud gasp. Callahan’s head gets thrown back as he stumbles away from me.

Before he can recover from the blow, I jump to my feet and kick him in the face. The side of my shoes hits him in the nose.
