I shook my head. “No, I’m not sure that I do.”
“He’s a financial advisor, honey,” Darcy cried, jumping up and down in her seat.
If anything proved her boobs weren’t real, that did because they barely moved, and she was bouncing like crazy.
“Darcy,” Jim growled. “What did I say?”
“It’s Nancy’s decision, Jim, yes, I know. So, what do you think, Nancy?”
“You don’t need to say tonight, sweetheart,” Jim replied, giving Darcy a nudge with his elbow. “Don’t let Darcy push you into saying yes, but I’d love to take care of your finances for you.”
“You would?” I was shocked. This was a such a nice gesture. “Are you sure?”
“I work for a lot of people in this town, so while I’m saying it’s no big deal, I’d also like to reduce my fee for you.”
“Oh God, no Jim I—”
“No, Nancy, no argument. What you’re wanting to do for this town is something good. If only for the fact that it sticks one on Annie Baker, the old buzzard.” Jim took a long swig of his water and then slammed the glass on the table. “You know she told Bronte that Rett needed more discipline.”
I had heard on the grapevine that after Rett had spent one day at the kindergarten Mrs. Baker was saying he was wild. He wasn’t. He was a cute little boy who had a personality. Knowing that Bronte and I were friends she’d kept me well out of that loop.
“The point is,” Darcy added. “Is that Jim will check out your finances cheaper than the does for the rest of the town. You’d be silly to say no.”
“Mom,” Shaw groaned. “What did Dad say?”
“I know, but it would be great for Nancy to have your dad help her out. Dad doing her finances and you doing her legal stuff.” Darcy started to giggle. “And anything else.”
“No Mom!”
“Oh my God, no. We are nothing like that,” I cried.
“What the hell, Mom!”
“Well, I just thought.” Darcy shrugged but had a little smirk twitching at her lips.
It was time for me to go. I shouldn’t have even stayed for dinner in the first place. I couldn’t have Darcy thinking those kind of things about me and Shaw.
“Well you thought wrong, Mom,” Shaw said, pushing a piece of bread into his mouth and giving me the side-eye.
“I just thought that you seemed to spend a lot of time together and Shaw is doing the real estate thing for you for nothing, so I just—”
“Mom, it’s my pro bono hours. I have to do so many, you know that.” Shaw glared at her. “Nancy and I would never… no just no.”
I narrowed my eyes on him and scowled. “You don’t have to sound so vehemently against it.” I hissed. “You do know what that word means, right?”
Shaw’s brow furrowed. “I’m not sure, do you think you could explain it to me.”
“Oh gosh,” Darcy cried. “I was right about you two. Why didn’t you just say?”
“Darc, what did they say?” Jim rolled his eyes. “Were you even listening?”
Darcy tutted and blinked before turning her attention back to me. “You both are just so hot together. Can you imagine the babies that you two would have?”
“Fuck, Mom!” Shaw threw his napkin down on the table. “Will you give it a rest. I’ve only just become a father, don’t even think about me having any more kids for a long time yet.”
What the hell was Darcy saying, how the hell could she even think about me and Shaw having babies? The thought was… well, it was awful. This was like a nightmare, and I really needed to wake up.
“Shaw watch your mouth, son,” Jim said and then turned to Darcy. “But he has a point sweetheart.”
