“You heard what the cops said this morning about Marcus Humphry?” I asked but knew he was sitting there and heard it all.
“Yeah, old boyfriend, right?”
“He was, and I hadn’t seen him around Hope Chapel or Elkview since before Sophia left. And then, all of a sudden, he appeared when she did. My gut says that’s not a coincidence. So I want you to find everything you can on Marcus.”
“I will see what I can find out and let you know when I have a file together, it shouldn’t be too complicated,” Kickstand assured me.
“I should mention, three years ago, I was sent a video with Marcus in it, there was a woman who looked like Sophia in bed with him, and he called her Sophia and time stamped it on a night when he knew we wouldn’t be together. I have no doubt he wanted me to break up with Sophia, but I think someone else was involved.”
“That’s why you broke up? Man, that sucks, and Sophia never knew? How’d you find out it wasn't her in the video?”
My gut clenched at what I had believed. “Yes, and now I am doing whatever I need to do to get her back. I was such a fool; Sophia had a birthmark I forgot about until I saw it again. The woman didn’t have it.”
“Wow, Lord, that is one fuck up. I’m surprised Silver hasn’t killed and dumped your body, or Sophia hasn’t done it herself. I wish you luck,” Kickstand chuckled, shaking his head.
“Thanks, brother; let me know when you have something,” I said, walking out the door. I was going to grab my bike and start looking at houses. I wanted to get us out of the clubhouse as soon as possible.
CHAPTER TEN
“SOPHIA LYNN COLE, You stop right there.”I turned from where I was going outside, seeing Lettie rushing toward me. “How could you sleep with him?” she fumed.
I knew this was coming. “Who told you?”
“Does it matter? Everyone knows about the wildcat who clawed Lord last night. Apparently, you left your mark. By the way, I would find it hot if it was with anybody else but him. Why Sophia?”
I pinched the bridge of my nose. I love Lettie, but she was the type of woman who, if you crossed her, there was no second chance, and she had a hard time understanding anything else, not to mention she was one pushy bitch, and I loved her. “I woke up with him in my bed, and it felt good. I wanted and needed what Rowen gave me last night. It doesn’t mean I forgive him.”
“That sneaky bastard, playing dirty. I should have known,” she smirked, crossing her arms over her chest.
“It was just sex. I’m not getting back with Rowen. I didn’t want anyone to know, but this morning happened.”
“Yeah, heard about that. Someone killed Marcus; that’s some crazy shit. It wasn’t Lord, was it? Lettie scoffed jokingly.
“No, don’t even joke about that. Because honestly, if he weren’t with me last night, I would think the same thing.”
“I’m glad to hear it was just sex with Lord because I have a man lined up for you. And he’s not a club member because since Lord wants you, none of the guys will touch you,” she said, rolling her eyes.
“Really, Lettie, it’s fine. I don’t need a date; Rowen took care of that itch for me last night.” And boy did he take care of it. My vagina will ache for days. With Rowen’s size, a ghost dick lingers between your legs.
“There is no harm in going out with the guy. Randy comes in to get his hair cut a few times a month. He owns a gym in Elkview and is hot as hell and single. I showed him your picture, and Randy was interested, so I gave him your number.”
“Lettie! What if he’s some weird psycho? You can’t just give my number out to men,” I scolded her. And I wasn’t interested. I silenced that part of me asking why.
“He’s not. One of the girls in the salon knew a woman he dated; Randy is totally fine. Stop making excuses. I know deep down you want nothing more than to be with Rowen. After the way he treated you, I will do everything to stop it,” Lettie retorted, blue eyes snapping. And I knew she meant every word. It was her way.
Best to agree so she would drop it. My dad had already scolded me earlier, reminding me how much Rowen hurt me. I had enough for one day. “Fine, I’ll go out with him if he calls. Now I need to get Roe. Linda and Tom are probably already here.”
“That’s my girl; I’ll see you later,” Lettie said, hugging me before walking away.
I walked out behind the clubhouse in one of the grassy areas, picnic tables, and some old playground equipment that had been there for as long as I could remember. Shadow had it all fixed and upgraded since there would now be more children running around here playing at times. And there being pushed on one of the swings was Roe, with Rowen pushing her, Linda and Tom watching. Rowen saw me and stopped the swing, helping Roe off.
“Mommy,” Roe yelled, running toward me. She looked so cute, she had thick auburn hair, and Linda had put it up with what looked to be fifty little butterfly clips in all different colors. My little Roe got nothing of me in the looks department; she was all Rowen O’Rourke.
I scooped her up and kissed her, hugging her to me. “I missed you, little smurf. And look how pretty you look,” I praised, touching her hair.
“Grams did it. It match my dress,” Roe babbled, taking her hands and pulling at her white sundress with butterflies all over it.
“It was so wonderful having Rowena with us the last few days, and I know we just returned her but would you be willing to let her spend next weekend with us?” Linda asked, hope in her kind brown eyes. If ever two people were meant to be grandparents, it’s these two.
