“No, Alex would have said something to me.”

“Would he?I was just a baby.Why would he tell you that?It would be years before I was capable of transitioning or being a threat to him and your relationship with him.”

“But Alex and I weren’t even together then.”

“Okay, but he knew how strong our bond was.He said that he saw in your mind when you were mating that Julian didn’t get staked as he fell.He said that he knew you put him into the sun and that you prayed he would come back to you.”

I just sat there numb.Zander was Alex’s son, and he knew that he was reborn from Julian.Why would he never tell me this?

“Why would Alex have your blood tested?”

“Because he was testing the theory of reborns.I think that is how Portage found me.Portage was searching blood records for anomalies that could lead to more reborns.He must have had someone working in the lab where Alex sent my blood.Portage is the one that killed my mother and kidnapped me.”Zander shook his head.“What an asshole to kill my mother and then steal his own brother’s child.But what bothers me more is that Alex knew he had done that, and he never came to get me.”

“Why wouldn’t Alex come for you?”

“He said in the journals that he knew that Joseph would care for me because he knew that eventually, he would try to use me against Alex, and he hoped that when the truth came to light, I would side with him and not Joseph.”

“But why wouldn’t Alex tellmethis?”

“I don’t know.Maybe Alex didn’t want to get your hopes up that it might have been me.I was too young then to know for sure.When Alex died, I was only eighteen.”

“What else did Alex say in those journals?”

He glanced to the table, and my eyes followed his to lock on to the box sitting there.“He said a lot, and I think you need to read them.There is one more thing I should tell you.”

“What?”I asked as anxiety raced through my body and the baby kicked my stomach.

“Alex had another son.Or he did.I don’t know if he’s still alive, but when Alex wrote this, he was.”

“Who?”

“Do you know anyone by the name of Corbin?”

I frowned.“Corbin?No, I’ve never heard that name before.What did he say about him?”

“Only that it was a long time ago and before Calista came into the picture.”

“So he’s old.”

“Yes, he is.Probably just over a hundred if he’s alive.”

“What did Alex say about him?”

“Not much, other than he never had contact with him.He had a falling out with the mother, Gladys, I think her name was, and never saw either of them again, although from time to time, he checked on him to make sure he was alright.He mentioned that he was disappointed in himself for not trying to build a relationship with him.”

“Maybe I do need to read those journals.Who else has read them?”

“Garrett told me that Clayton read them and that he was going to let Gabe read them if I thought it would be a good idea.”

“Yeah, well, before anyone else does, I need to see what’s inside.”

“I think that’s a good idea.”He stood and collected the box.“There is a great deal of information about all that Alex did.”

“When did you get these?”

“Yesterday.”

“And you read them all already?”
