“Lakyn!”
I roll my eyes and sigh when I hear Red’s voice in the distance coming toward me.
She’s like a loyal puppy that loves her master no matter how many times she gets kicked.
I retrieve my weapon and glance around until I see that hair of hers skipping toward me, then I grin.
“Kinda makes you wish the sun fuckers were still alive to see this, eh?” I call out to her, raising Trixie’s head.
Red stops skipping, her eyes widening in disbelief for a second before she breaks out into a run and wraps her arms around me when she reaches me.
I grunt from the pressure she’s applying and let out a sigh. My hands are full so I can’t shove her off, and when she makes her little declaration, I feel like maybe I haven’t killed enough people today.
“Oh, Lakyn. Now we can be together forever!”
I glance down at her, roll my eyes again, then shrug repeatedly until she lets go.
And if that isn’t enough to keep my dick from getting hard ever again, suddenly I hear what sounds like a number of air horns going off at once.
I glare at Red to keep her in place, then look over to the left. It seems that I didn’t kill enough of the Sun Fuckers to scare the rest off like I thought, but I think I’ve done a good enough job of putting a little dent in their operations.
Without The Daughter of Bullshit, they’ll all probably go back home and try to get off the smack water.
I can’t help but think that I’m a great guy since I keep helping people get clean.
“Do me a favor,” I say to Red, glancing at her quickly. “Go inside and rip a piece of Trixie’s dress off. And if you can find a box, even better.”
I eye the gathering crowd with amusement and shake my head.
And Trixie’s too for good measure.
They look like the world just collapsed around them and I guess I’m supposed to give a shit, but I don’t.
After about ten minutes of keeping them crying and blubbering by swinging Trixie’s head at them a few times, Red finally shows back up.
She’s got a box and some ribbon.
This is gonna be the best present he ever received,I think with a grin as I set Trixie’s head inside of it and make quick work of wrapping it up.
FIFTEEN
No One Else But Us
DAPHNE
I giggled when Lakyn backed his car into a row of the sun people. Served them right for trying to chase after us.
I think it has to do with Trixie being in the car, but that serves her right too. She tried to be better than Lakyn, tried to prove that she always would be, but he showed her.
I feel much better after drinking some of the cactus water, and as I glance over at Lakyn and rest a hand on his arm, I know he sees it too.
I wish that the gentle evil would still swim circles of gold around him. I wish it would expel with each exhalation of his cigarette, but I’m happy with what we have, and I know that no one will be able to take it from us.
“Isn’t this great?” I ask him after he swats my hand away. He’ll learn to love me in time, so I don’t mind him pushing me away for now. We’re meant for each other and he knows it as much as I do.
“What’s that?” he inquires in that bored tone of his that I’ve come to adore.
“We finally did it,” I reply gleefully.
