She was just staring at me amusingly. “Really? Are you up for the challenge, though?” She smirked.

My eyes widened. “Really? Oh my god, when - “

I couldn’t finish what I was saying when Leila’s fist hit my face making me see stars and black out.

Chapter Nine

I gasped hard when I felt a cold splash hitting my face. I immediately sat up.

“Oh god, you’re awake! Finally!” I immediately turned to my right when I heard a familiar voice. There I saw Leila massaging her head as if she was so stressed with what was going on.

I attempted to open my mouth to speak, but I immediately shut my eyes when I felt the pain in my left cheek. “Aw,” I groaned.

“Here, here,” Leila handed me a cold compress. I looked at her confusingly but still got it anyway. Slowly, I dumped it on my cheek. I even blinked multiple times to digest what was happening. Wait, what happened again? Why does my face hurt?

“What happened?” I asked Leila.

She was stunned for a bit. She bit her lips while staring at me. I saw a glint of regret in her eyes as she tried to open her mouth to say something but then closed it again as if she had changed her mind. I creased my forehead.

“What?” I added. Is there something she wanted to say or what?

Leila pursed her lips and scratched her head. “You passed out right after I punched you on the face. I’m sorry,” she said, slowly averting her eyes on me.

My mouth parted, and my eyes widened in shock. I gasped at her. “Oh my gosh, I passed out? How long?!” I exclaimed, but suddenly yelped when I felt the pain in my cheek again.

“Hmm. For a half-day, I think.”

“What?!”

Leila looked at me apologetically. “I’m sorry, Celine. I didn’t know that you won’t be able to dodge it…” she guiltily said.

I was speechless. I just couldn’t believe that a single punch made me pass out for half a day. The thought of it made me extremely embarrassed.

Damn. I couldn’t even dodge a punch to save my life!

Perhaps, Michael was right for rejecting me. He was right for thinking how weak and incapable I am. All the other she-wolves in the Crestmoon pack also know that. This is the reason why I was banished from my former pack, and if I continue being weak, I might get banished for the second time.

I couldn’t help but scoff, realizing how I was so mediocre with my life. When my father was still alive, I always thought that I would be protected, that nothing in this world could ever harm me. But when he was gone, I was all alone, with nothing to depend on but myself, and I realized just how vulnerable I was without my father’s shadow.

No, I can’t depend on my father forever. Now that he’s gone, it’s time to stand for me now.

“Celine…”

“Hmm?” I cleared my throat and looked at Leila.

She was looking at me anxiously. “Sorry, I didn’t know that you’re not that used to fighting…” she said in a small voice.

I sighed and looked at her. “It’s fine. It’s not your fault that I’m weak,” I said, a hint of bitterness in my voice.

She looks at her fingers, unable to think what to say. Awkward silence reigned between the two of us. I shifted on my seat while glancing at her, who was sitting on her bed across mine.

I heaved a sigh and decided to break the silence.

“That’s why you need to help me.”

Her eyes darted in my direction. She looked stunned. “W-What?”

“Leila, I am weak, and you witnessed that earlier. But I can’t be this weak forever. So please help me, Leila, please,” I begged her.
