She snorted. “Ah, no. If I were to be seen anywhere near you right now, it would be considered high treason.”
“I’m so sorry, Mary.”
“Don’t be sorry,” she reprimanded Brie. “This is everything we’ve been working for.”
“But, it comes at such a great cost to you.”
“Listen, Brie. I have been controlled by that fucker all of my life. Everything that I’ve done to help you, I knew Greg saw it as a slap across his face. I understand there may be consequences, and I fully accept them. For the first time in my life, my eyes are open and my actions are my own.”
The power in Mary’s voice was inspiring.
“You’re going to be big, Brie. Mark my words. Everyone will know your name.”
“That doesn’t mean anything to me unless I know you’re safe.”
She laughed. “You’re so unprofessional, Stinks. In a dog-eat-dog world, you’re like a fluffy bunny. You’re lucky you’ve got a weasel like me protecting your back.”
“You’re not a weasel, Mary. You’re a freaking eagle with razor-sharp talons that rip and restrain your prey while you eat them alive.”
“Oh yeah, I like that. Hey, before I let you go, I have another juicy tidbit for you.”
“Fine. I’ll bite.”
“I visited Celestia with a load of baby shit. She told me Todd received a letter in the mail. You’ll never guess who it’s from.”
“You’re killing me, Mary,” Brie chuckled.
“It’s from Trevor’s mother.”
“Trevor?” she asked, before remembering it was the name of the boy Faelan had killed in the car accident. “Oh God, that’s the last thing he needs.”
“I advised her to burn it, but Marquis won’t let her.”
Brie desperately prayed that whatever was in the letter wouldn’t derail Faelan when he returned to the States.
Brie struggled to fall asleep that night.
Rather than fight it, she opened her eyes and stared at Sir, who was sleeping soundly.
She was struck by how incredibly handsome he was, lying there peaceful and still.
The immense love she felt for him suddenly bubbled up inside of her. It was so intense that she struggled not to caress his face.
Brie didn’t want to wake him, but the urge proved too much and she lightly grazed her hand against his cheek, thrilled at the connection she felt.
He opened his eyes, staring straight into hers.
For a moment, Brie felt guilty knowing she had just woken him in the middle of the night.
But a smile spread across his face. “Hello.”
She swooned just hearing his voice.
“What was that for?” he asked.
Brie could hardly contain her love when she told him, “I saw you lying there and was so overcome with emotion, I just had to touch you.”
His smile broadened. “Really?”
