Kat nods. “I completely understand why this is your favorite tool.”

I carefully place the wand back in the box, telling him, “Thank you for letting us experiment with your wands.”

He laughs. “They’re yours to keep. You’ll need to bring it with you tomorrow for your first practicum.”

I shake his hand, moved by his generosity. “Thank you.”

“Use it in good health, Mr. Davis,” he chuckles. “And, if you ever have questions, don’t hesitate to call and ask.”

He turns to the other students. “That goes for all of you.”

I don’t arrive back at my apartment until almost two in the morning. Even though I need to get up by five o’clock to get ready for work, I find I’m way too wired to fall asleep.

I know the six weeks ahead are going to be hell to survive. Still, I can’t wait for the next class.

Friends

Anton Durov surprises me with a call at work the next day. “Moy droog, what do you say to dropping everything to spend the day with me?”

I chuckle. “Much as I want to, I can’t take off to Russia.”

“You always give me the same excuse when I ask you. Work, work, work.”

“What can I say? It’s my reality.”

“What about flying out this weekend, then?”

“Sorry, I just started the Dominant Training course. I literally have no time right now.”

“Tell me more about this Dominant Training class,” he says with interest.

I tell him excitedly, “It’s more than I hoped it would be, Durov.” Glancing at my watch again, I sigh. “But I have to go. I’ll call you tonight and give you all the details.”

“Fine,” he chuckles. “We’ll talk later.”

I go back to work, losing myself in my current assignment, which is why I nearly jump out of my skin when I hear Durov’s voice behind me a few minutes later.

“Are you ready to talk now,moy droog?”

Spinning around in my chair, I’m stunned to see the burly Russian standing in my tiny cubicle.

He grins. “Is that a no, then, comrade?”

I shoot out of my chair and clasp his shoulder, thrilled to see him. “I can’t believe you’re here!”

He smirks. “Live and in the flesh.”

I shake my head in disbelief. “What are you doing in the US?”

Durov gives me a troubled look and shakes his head.

He is like a brother to me. Sensing something’s wrong, I drop everything and ask my boss for time off.

Minutes later, I return from his office and grab my jacket. “I’m free for the rest of the day. Where to?”

He grins. “The beach,moy droog.”

Durov insists I ride with him. I notice he has an entourage of men for protection going everywhere with us. When I ask him what’s wrong, he ignores the question and asks, “When was the last time you’ve been to the beach, comrade?”
