Then in the same bright flash in which she arrived, Mazzikin and her two hounds disappear.

Mateo moans. I lean over him, running my hands over his face and body, checking to make sure there are no hidden wounds.

“What did you do?” Mateo asks from where he lies; the color has returned to his face and he sits, forcing me to move back. He pulls my hands into his. “What did you promise her?”

I gulp and look away. “My first born.”

He hisses and I flinch, hating how angry it sounds.

What was I supposed to do? I had a chance to save him and I took it.

He drops my hands. “You shouldn’t have done that.”

Standing, he flashes away from me and down the path from which we came. Colt and Grayson race after him.

With a sharp breath, I drop my head into my hands.

Evelyn sighs. “He’s always so grumpy.”

“What was I supposed to do? I couldn’t let him die.”

“It’s okay, D. We’ll figure it out when the time comes.” Evelyn pats my back.

“We should leave before we attract more trouble.” Kerberos’ bare feet stop a few inches away from me.

“Why didn’t you tell me what she’d want?”

He grinds his jaw. “Mazzikin takes what she likes. I did not know what she’d want in return. Your child will be taken care of.”

“If I have a child, she plans to use them as a weapon. How is that being taken care of?”

“She marked your soul. You will have a child, there is no if.”

Kerberos tips his head to the side and gazes into the trees. “Your friends wait at the portal. We must go.”

He doesn’t answer my other question.
