“There’s something wrong with Maddy. I was about to bring her over to see you. She shouldn’t be getting sick.”
“What do you mean?”
“She’s been throwing up.”
Lily’s laughter sounded in the background.
“What’s so damn funny?” he asked, his patience growing thin.
“Doesn’t Maddy know what’s wrong?” Ava asked, sounding amused.
“If she did, don’t you think she’d tell me?”
“I don’t know. Some women like to keep it a secret for a while.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Basic biology, Dominic.”
“Congratulations, brother,” Lily said, her voice filled with laughter.
Dominic stared at the phone. Looked at Maddy, who was standing in the bathroom doorway, a towel wrapped around her nakedness, her eyes wide. “Do you know what they’re talking about?”
She nodded, her face flushed.
“Well, I wish to hell somebody would tell me!”
“Hang up, Dominic,” Maddy said. “We need to talk.”
He didn’t bother to tell Ava goodbye, just ended the call. “All right, what the devil’s going on?”
“Do you love me?”
“What kind of fool question is that?” he asked irritably. “Didn’t I prove it to you last night? Twice?”
“Do you still want to marry me?”
“Just name the day.”
“What should we name the baby?”
He stared at her, feeling as if someone had just punched him in the gut. “You’re pregnant? How?”
“The usual way,” Maddy said, and burst out laughing. “I wish you could see your face.”
“Pregnant.” He said the word as if he’d just heard it for the first time. “Pregnant.” A slow smile spread across his face as he went to Maddy and drew her gently into his arms. “Why didn’t you tell me sooner?”
“I didn’t know until Lily said congratulations and everything clicked into place.” Her gaze searched his. “Does it change anything between us?”
“Damn right,” he said, his knuckles caressing her cheek. “It makes me love you even more.”
Wrapping her arms around his neck, she whispered, “Show me.”
“Any time, my love.”
She giggled as he swept her off her feet and carried her back to bed.
