“New topic,” Millie says. “Kit, let’s get back to you. Are you feeling okay? We need to report back to Butch.”
Raine walks over and grabs my wrist. “I need to do this just to tell Butch I did. He always knows when I’m lying.”
“Everyone knows when you’re lying,” Millie says.
“Your pulse is elevated,” Raine says, “but that’s probably because you’re thinking about sexy body parts. Your color is good. You don’t have a temperature. Did you hit anything when you fell?”
“My butt.”
“Tailbone?”
“No, my left butt cheek fell hard on a rock.”
“You’ve got plenty of padding there, though,” Elle says.
“Shut up,” I say, shoving her, “but yeah, I think I’m good. It feels better already.”
“I can look at it if you want—”
“Yeah,” Millie says, standing up. “She’s apparently an expert at looking at butts.”
Raine turns around and looks at Millie. “You can look at Alex’s butt if it will make you feel better.”
“I don’t want to look at Alex’s butt.”
“Seriously?” I say. “I do. Is that any open invitation?”
“No,” Raine says, smiling as she hands me the wine bottle. “But for the record, it’s amazing.”
“So apparently you’ve looked at Alex’s butt longer than you looked at Mason’s?” Millie says.
“Okay,” Raine says, grabbing Millie’s shoulders. “You have exactly fifteen seconds to get over it. You know how it works. Best friend rules. Do you want to count the seconds down together?”
“No,” Millie says, shoving Raine’s arms away. “I’m officially over it.”
“Excellent. Now let’s get you back to your martinis before you get any crankier,” Raine says, grabbing Millie’s hand and pulling her to the door. “Kit, I’m in room 206 if you need anything. Maybe put some ice on your butt and take a few ibuprofen. Are you joining us downstairs?”
“No,” Elle says as she jumps up to follow them to the door. “Will you tell Nash to text me when he’s ready to go? No rush. Kit and I need alone time.”
Elle closes the door behind them and takes a running leap back into bed. “Talk, Kit. What’s going on with you? You break up with Mateo and ten seconds later you’re having sex sweats about some guy you just met.”
“Those are two separate things.”
“Are they?” she says, her eyes getting wide. “I know how you love a good rebound guy. Is that what this is?”
“Maybe. I don’t know. I wasn’t planning on lusting after anyone on this trip. I needed time to think about whether or not I wanted to break up with Mateo and then he broke up with me seconds before I left. My head’s still spinning. It’s not even been a full two days since we broke up. I think. The time difference has me all confused.”
She takes a drink out of the wine bottle and then passes it back to me. “Have you talked to Mateo? Has he tried to call you?”
“Dead phone, remember?” I pull my phone off the table and hold it up. “I had a bunch of text messages from him when I got off the plane, but I hadn’t checked them yet when I dumped my phone into the lake. I’m guessing Blitzen Bay doesn’t have a place where I can buy a new cell phone.”
“I don’t think so, but Big Bear might. Or we can drive back to L.A. tomorrow and grab one.” She pulls her phone out of her back pocket. “You can call him on mine.”
“No, I don’t really want to talk to him. Not yet.”
“Kit, we’ve talked a hundred times since Nash and I left Spain in March. You haven’t said anything about this. Did it just come out of the blue?”
“No,” I say, sighing. “I’ve been talking to him for six months about moving with me. I guess I was hoping he’d change his mind before this trip and then we could come here together and start making our plans. But he didn’t change his mind, so it looks like I’m single and moving here by myself.”
“You might be moving here by yourself, but you won’t be alone when you get here. I can’t wait to have you close to me again.”
I lay my head on her lap. “And I can’t wait to be close to you. I’ve missed you so much.”
