Void flung an arm over her shoulder and lowered his head to whisper in her ear. "You've got some explaining to do."

* * *

"You did what?!" Void shrieked.

"I-"

"Oh no, I heard you," he snapped, getting up to pace inside the small room they were in.

Luther had driven them to a safe house just outside the city. She had a lot of things she needed to tell her uncleand she didn't think being surrounded by vampires in Luther's million-dollar mansion was the right place to do it, especially considering his reaction to Luther. She had been right.

Void continued to pace, head down, eyes narrowed, agitation lacing each step as he walked back and forth. "Rule number seven," he barked.

"Never-"

"Never talk to vampires!" He yelled, cutting her off. "And what do you do? You go and sign your life away to one!" His eyes snapped to Luther, enraged.

Luther leaned casually against a wall on the far side of the room, one leg bent at the knee, arms crossed over his muscular chest, a smirk on his face.

"It's only for-"

"Don't. You. Dare. Try to justify yourself," Void snarled, cutting her off again.

Zamorra clenched her teeth in annoyance. She was always taught to respect her elders, even if they pissed her off. The fact he wouldn't even let her finish a goddamn sentence was really testing her patience though.

"Your parents... my sister died protecting you and this... this is how you repay them? By tethering yourself to a fucking bloodsucker!?" He lashed out, kicking over a side table and sending it hurdling across the room. A vase sitting on top tumbled to the ground, shattering into a thousand tiny pieces.

Zamorra flinched, a combination of his words and his actions making her recoil and her werewolf whimper in distress. She hated when her uncle got mad, and worse, she hated when she was the one responsible for it.

Luther blurred to her side in an instant, a hard look on his face. "That's enough."

"You, stay out of it. This is between me and my niece."

"Listen to what she has to say, and I will," Luther demanded, altering his body so he stood in front of her.

Void frowned, tracking the protective gesture with confusion. "Get away from her."

Luther looked over his shoulder, his eyes connecting with hers briefly before she nodded. He turned his body slightly, allowing her just enough space to slip past and stand toe to toe with her uncle. She felt Luther at her back, his presence helping to calm her nerves. She wasn't scared of Void, but he did have that Vatali temper, something she was all too familiar with.

"For a long time I stayed hidden. I got a job at a bar that was owned by a human, my apartment building had a human landlord and human tenants. My entire goddamn life was centred around humans. My werewolf slumbered every single day I left the comfort of my home. I trained day in and day out making sure I was always at the top of my game. I did everything… everything my parents taught me!"

"Then explain him!" He yelled, pointing at Luther.

"It was either him, or death!"

Void stilled, his arm slowly lowering to his side.

"Another werewolf found me. Cade. I have no idea how. He came into the bar one night while I was working, and the second he got a whiff of my were, he hunted me."

"Why wasn't she slumbered?"

"I worked there for years and never once saw a single supernatural come in. I thought it would be safe to have her free." Zamorra shook her head. "I was an idiot. He chased me into Luther's territory and at that point I only had two options. Leave with Cade and we both know what would have happened if I did, or-"

"Or serve," Void finished, jaw clenched.

"Yes," she sighed. "I followed all the rules my parents ever gave me, especially rule number one."

Void closed his eyes, pain etched all over his face as an assortment of buried memories bombarded him. "Fight like there's no tomorrow," he recited, stepping forward. He wrapped his arms around her, placing her head on his shoulder and holding her tight like he used to when she was a child.
