Noah glanced at me sideways and then stormed to the car. “Come on, Detective. The sooner we get there, the sooner we can sleep.”

I huffed and then muttered under my breath as I moved toward my vehicle, “Or the sooner I’ll tear your head off because you confuse the fact that I’m not your subordinate.”

I took my time making it to my car. Noah lost his patience and honked my horn, forcing me to stop, mid-stride, and stare at him briefly before searching our surroundings. The man had a death wish. He didn’t seem to get the point that he was supposed to be under protection and making noises like that wasn’t doing him any favors.

As far as I could tell, no one heard the horn or at least cared enough to find out why it was going off. I continued to the car, shaking my head, and muttering a series of creative curses under my breath.

Once I climbed into the driver’s seat, I inserted the key into the ignition and started the engine. Within minutes, we were at Savannah’s house. Noah was the first one out of the car, rushing to the front door, and was already knocking when I made it to him. The sound echoed incredulously through the night air, announcing our location to anything and everything hiding in the shadows.

“Think you could be any louder?” I asked as I looked around.

“If she’s home and asleep, it needs to be loud,” Noah said.

“Not if it is going to draw unwanted attention,” I said. “Move out of the way.”

I pushed him to the side and knocked. After waiting for several minutes, straining to hear any movement in the house and outside, I knocked again.

Sometime later, I turned to Noah. “She’s asleep and not coming. Let’s go.”

“No way, man,” he said. “I’m not leaving until we have an answer.”

He proceeded to bang on the door.

“Will you keep it down?” I whisper-screamed.

“Relax,” he said, shoving his hands into his pockets.

There was some shuffling coming from the inside of the house. I turned my attention to the door only for Noah to knock once again.

The door swung open.

I couldn’t believe my eyes as Savannah stood within the opened door, barely covered by the robe that hung off her shoulders. She had bruises on her face that faded away more and more by the second. Despite the lack of light, I could still tell they were there. A small cut sat on her bottom lip, a little more plump than normal. A small bruise poked out from under the fold in her robe.

My eyebrows knitted together as a pinch entered the center of my forehead. Then I breathed in deep…

Arousal filled my nose. It belonged to her. There was another scent that wafted off her and was familiar, but my mind wasn’t able to process who it belonged to. All I could think about was her arousal and the fact that she wasn’t wearing anything underneath that thin, barely there, robe that dangled from her curves. Her nipples were erect, trying to poke through the fabric, taunting me to take them into my mouth. Even when she crossed her arms over her chest, she couldn’t hide them. They were still very much so visible. And the way that her robe hugged her curves… it took everything inside me not to push Noah to the side and guide her to the couch… and finally make her mine.

“What do you want?” she demanded.

My eyes met hers. My lips parted, but no words would escape them. I could only stare at her in utter confusion for a moment before I took in a deep, sobering breath.

“Funny how picking up a phone and checking in was too much to ask for… or were you just too busy getting laid to be bothered by that?” I asked. I didn’t bother to hide my frustration from her. Sex was the source of the other scent. I was sure of it. I still couldn’t determine who. She was incredibly distracting with that robe of hers.

She scoffed and then sucked in a breath. “First of all, you showed up at my door at four in the morning. Who in the hell does that? Second of all, it is none of your damn business who I’m screwing or why.”

Savannah tried to slam the door shut. Noah slapped it with his hand, forcing it back open. Savannah scoffed and cursed. Noah didn’t act as though he cared. He stepped inside, moving around her, ignoring the look on her face.

“Oh, please, do come in. I wasn’t in the middle of anything at all,” she said, gesturing inside her living room. “Make yourself at home, by all means.”

“Whoever he is, he’s still here.” Noah sniffed the air with a look of determination on his face.

“What the hell are you guys doing here anyway?” Savannah demanded. She turned her attention to me and added, “Isn’t he supposed to be in a hotel room, under your protection? Not out gallivanting all over the city.”

I stepped into the house. “I’m still protecting him.”

“And we weren’t gallivanting all over the city,” Noah added.

“Excuse the hell out of me,” she said and slammed her door shut. “You both had better make this quick and get the hell out so I can enjoy the rest of my night in peace. In fact, now that you have had a look at me and can clearly tell I’m fine, you can leave now.”
